The History of the Building

 

two-and-one-half story Italianate-style double, cruciform plan. Brick, gabled end with overhanging and sinuously carved brackets faces Baring Street. First-floor wood projecting bays. Entrances in cross arms. Roofline also has side gables. Paneled facade may be attributed to John Riddell.”

Previous Residents

 

1859, May 25: Title transferred to Silas W. Johnson by Hugh McIlvain

            Title to 3317 also transferred at the same time.  Silas W. Johnson was a lumber merchant at Market and 34th Sts.  He and his family also lived near there.  He and his wife, Sarah, were both 37 years old in 1860.  He claimed real estate valued at $4,500 and the same amount of personal property.  In the mid-1860s, they moved to 46 N. 39th St. and in 1870, he stated he was in the wholesale drug business.

 

1867 Directory: Samuel A. Abbott of Abbott & Co., scale manuf., NW 9th & Mellon

            The 1866 directory lists him living at 1223 N. 7th St. In 1870, he was living in the Grant Hotel.  His wife and children were living at 329 (later 401) N. 32nd St.

 

1870 Directory (Fall, 1869): Charles McIlvain

                                    Jane J. McKibbin, widow of William C.

                                    William Campbell McKibbin died in 1868 in Philadelphia.  He and Jane Denny Brackenridge were married in Pittsburgh.  He was a partner with Jeremiah McKibbin in the Merchant’s Hotel at 42 N. 4th St. where the family lived.

                                    The 1890 directory lists him living on N. 32nd St. at the corner of Lancaster Ave.

                                    William Lee McKibbin graduated from the medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1869.

            The 1866 Directory lists Roberts, G. W., dentist, 267 N 9th (home?)

            In 1880 they live at 1205 Arch St.

1877: Sidney Lanier: Letters between two poets. (Letters of Sidney Lanier: 1866-1881: 7//9/1877 pg. 197)  Note: this is the only letter from this address; many others from 1425 Walnut St. Perhaps he was just staying on Baring and not living there.

 

1880, Jan. 14: Death of Mrs. Elizabeth Ginna, 78 years old, of 3315 Baring St. She was born in Maryland and was widowed. Burial at Rising Sun, Cecil Co, MD. (Phila. Inquirer and Phila. Death Index)  Cause of death was "Hydro Pericardium," an abnormal collection of fluid in the pericardial cavity (Mortality Schedule, 1880 Census)

            Mary Johnson and Cynthia lived at 3210 Baring St. in 1900.

            Sarah Roberts and Robert Shoemaker were married in Gwynedd Monthly Meeting April 4, 1836.  She was the daughter of George and Rachel Roberts.  In 1910, Mary and Cynthia were living with Mary’s three unmarried sisters at 425 N. 33rd St.

            Title to 3315 transferred to Francis L. Elkins at the same time.

1895, April 15: Death of Jane Whitelock Griscom 75 years old, , wife of the late David J. Griscom of Woodbury, N.J. She was born in Phila.  Funeral from her late residence, 3315 Baring St. Burial at Woodbury Friends’ Grounds.

 

1896: Blue Book: David M. Hitch, D.D.S.

 

1898: D. M. Hitch: joined American Dental Association. (Trans. American Dental Assoc., vol 37, pg 4)

 

1900 Census: D. M. Hitch, Dr. – There is no information entered for him except his marital status: single.  There may be others who lived there, but no one was home to provide information.

            The 1910 Census shows David M Hitch (age 43, born in Del.) and his wife, Clara D Hitch (51, born in Del.) living in Ward 27 (West Phila., below Market St.).

            1917 Draft Registration; Almer Perry Stevens, 5228 Chest Ave., Phila., inspector for U. S. Railroad Administration.  He married Myrtle Yetter in Delaware in April, 1909.  She was from E. Stroudsburg, Pa.  He was living at 411 N. 33rd St.

            In 1900, he was boarding at 745 N. 40th St.  He was a railroad dispatcher.  He and his wife (Martha) had been married 5 years and had no children.

 

1912, March 29: Death of Margaret Kernan, 16 years old, daughter of Laurence Kernan and Katie Miller. She was born in N.J., her father was born in Ireland and her mother in N.Y.  She did housework.  Burial at New Cathedral Cemetery. (Phila. Death Index)

 

1913, Mar. 20: Title transferred to Laura A. Buckley, wife of George W. by Herman Hessenbruch

            Hessenbruch had bought the property at sheriff’s sale.

 

1920:

Harriet H. Buckley       10

            George Washington Buckley earned an LLB from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1899.  He married Laura T. Herbert in 1905.  She was the daughter of Nathaniel B. and Harriet H. Herbert.  He was a wholesale butcher.  In 1900, Laura was a school teacher.  They live at 500 N. 32nd St. (Mantua).  George Buckley was the son of Marcus Buckley, a stationer.  In 1900, they lived at 3950 Market St.

 

1930:

George W. Buckley      53        Lawyer with a law firm; married at age 28; parents born in England; renting for $25 per month

Laura Buckley             54        Married at age 29

Harriet H. Buckley       20        Bank clerk

 

1897, July 5: Death of George W. Buckley, 57 years old, of 3315 Baring St.

            “George W. Buckley, a lawyer with offices in the Crozer Building, who died Wednesday at his home, 3315 Baring st., will be buried tomorrow afternoon from 1820 Chestnut st. He was 57.

            “Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Buckley was educated in the public schools and was graduated from the Law School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1899. He belonged to the Masonic order and the Artisans.” (Inquirer, July 7)

 

1940:

Harriet H. Herbert                   89        Widowed; 8 years of schooling; owner, house valued at $5,700

Laura (Mrs. G. W.) Buckley     64        Daughter; widowed; 2 years of college

Harriet H. Buckley                  30        Granddaughter; previously a stenographer, she had been unemployed for 150 weeks; single; 2 years of high school

            Harriet Herbert is listed as Mrs. N. B. Herbert.

            Harriet H. Buckley apparently never married.  She was born Nov. 17, 1909 and died May 21, 1999 in Philadelphia.  (SSI Death Index)

 

1949, July 10: Death of Harriet H. Herbert, 99 years old, of 3315 Baring St., widow of Nathaniel B. Herbert. "Mrs. Herbert is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George W. Buckley; a son, W. P. Herbert; six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren." (Inquirer, July 11)

1978, May 7: For sale: “3315 Baring St. Built in historic Powelton Village Circa 1770 [sic.]. This 3 sty twin features 5 bedrms, 2½ mod bths & excel use of space & light. $62,000.” (Inquirer)
