An interesting note on Grugan’s experience
in the war:
“Captain Baggs, in his writings of the
Petersburg campaign [June, 1864], says:
"The rebels had a battery on the opposite side of the Appomatox [sic.] river that commanded the road upon which
our entrenchments had been made. It must have been a very poor battery or else
it was a long way off, for the shot and shell that reached us were so nearly
spent that some of the men wanted to try to catch them on the fly. They would
roll down our way like the balls along a ten-pin alley. There was one, however,
that had more force than the rest of them, for it passed between Major Anderson
and Adjutant Grugan as they sat at breakfast in their
tent. They moved their tent immediately.”
