The History of the Building

 

“two-story dark brick rowhouse with commercial first floor entrance opening next to door. Large multi-paneled second-floor window. Bracketed wood cornice.”

This building was part of the lot that included 3833 Lancaster Ave.

1887 Directory (Fall 1886): Mulhern Harry, driver

                         Mulhern James F., plumber

                         Mulhern, John P., plumber, John P. Mulhern & Bro., 3826 Haverford Ave.

            The 1884 directory lists James F. Mulhern, mariner, living at 3916 Woodland along with James Mulhern who was also a mariner. The 1886 directory lists all of them living at 618 N. 35th St. James F. was a clerk, John was a plumber, Henry J. Mulhern was a driver, and James was a boatman. The 1890 directory lists James F. as a plumber with John P. Mulhern & Bro. living at 3830 Hamilton St. His brother and partner, John P. was living at 10 Lowber St. along with Henry J. The business address was 3806 Haverford Ave.

 

1887: The Board of Health declared this premises and several other properties “by reason of foul and illegally drained wells, nuisances prejudicial to public health.” (Inquirer, Sept. 20)

1900: Not found in census

 

1900 Phila. Builders’ Guide: A. Gohn, carpenter (Oct. 17)

            Severl similar listings through 1907.

 

1903 & 1904 Business Directories: Gohn Andrew, carpenter

            He lived at 3815 Fairmount Ave. he 1907 Phila. Builders’ Guide includes several items giving his business address as 3824 Hamilton St.

 

1908: Female Help Wanted “Canvassers – Crew work; good salary; permanent work. 3826 Hamilton.”

 

1910: Not found in census

 

1914 Phila. Builders’ Guide: “J. T. Stackhouse, William Smith and Terrence Flood have formed a partnership under the name Stackhouse and Smith, to carry on the business of building construction. Offices and shop have been opened at 3826 Hamilton street. Mr. Stackhouse and Mr. Smith were formerly with James G. Doak & Co.” (Sept. 23)

 

1921: Want Ads: Male Help “Salesman to sell candy wholesale, liberal commission. Call at factory, 3826 Hamilton.”

            Female Help “Chocolate coaters, good wages. Call at factory, 3826 Hamilton.”
