3820 Lancaster Avenue

 

“three-story brick rowhouse with commercial first floor shopfront, second floor projecting bay and two registers at third floor with brownstone lintels, very heavy Gothic pendant detail on building.”

            The 1872 Hopkins Atlas only shows a building at the rear of the lot. The current building is shown in the 1878 Scott Atlas.

            There were renovations in 1893 (see below).

            The 1877-1880 Directories list him at 3810 Lancaster Ave.

            William E. Grigg was the son of Thomas and Isabella (Robinson) Grigg. In 1850, they lived in Sebec, Piscataquis, Maine where Thomas was a mill operative. In 1870, they lived in Landis, Cumberland, N.J. where Thomas was farmer. William was the third o eleven children. He died in 1942 in Los Angeles.

            Mary M. (Butler) Grigg was born in 1856 and died in 1941 in Los Angeles.

1882: W. E. Grigg made a donation to support of the building of the Powelton Avenue Baptist Church at 3608-3616 Powelton Ave.

            Note: Thomas H. Grigg is now listed as a cabinet maker at 3826 Lancaster and living at 3838 Baring

1889, May 30: Title for 3820 Lancaster transferred to Clayton W. Peirson by Mary M. Grigg, by Sheriff

 

1891 Dir.: James J. Miller, baker at 3820 Lancaster & 3127 & home at 3127 Powelton

 

1891, Mar. 12: Title for 3820 Lancaster transferred to Alexander Simpson, Jr. by Clayton W. Peirson

1893: Permit issued to “Hayes Mendenhall, contractor, [for] repairs to burned building at 3820 Lancaster avenue.” (Inquirer, July 12)

            James J. Miller and Sallie R. Harbour were married in Philadelphia in 1889.

 

1903: Ads: “ADVANCE with the times, feed your dogs up-to-date food. American dog biscuit; write for dog book. Hygienic Food Co. 3820 Lancaster avenue.”

   And  “CHICKENS NOT LAYING? Whose fault? Feed American Albumen chicken food; notice immediate effect. Write for book. Hygienic Food Co. 3820 Lancaster avenue.” (Inquirer, March 1)

 

1903, July 22: Title for 3820 Lancaster transferred to Albert P. Gerhard by J. Dickinson (rest illegible)

            Albert Pepper Gerhard was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1900, he lived with his parents at 59th and City Line Ave. In 1909, he lied at the corner of 57th St. and Overbrook Ave.

 

1905: Male Help Wanted: “PAPERHANGER – first class. $3. J. W. Richmond, 3820 Lancaster ave.” (Inquirer May 4)

 

1906: Male Help Wanted: “PAPERHANGERS – Ten good paperhangers wanted. $3. Richmond, 3820 Lancaster ave.” (Inquirer Apr. 23)

            Similar ads appeared regularly through 1915.

 

1907: “GIRL wanted in wall paper store and to attend office. 3820 Lancaster ave.” (Inquirer, May 24)

 

1912: Obituary: “RUDDEROW (nee DAVIS) – Suddenly 29th inst. REBECCA, wife of Harris Rudderow. Relatives and friends invited to services, Weds. 10 A. M., residence 3820 Lancaster ave. Internment Northwood. Remains may be viewed Tues. 7 until 9 P. M.” (Inquirer, Jan. 23)

            In 1910, they lived at 3436 Warren St. He was a wagon driver. She was born in England in June 1843 and immigrated in 1851. They lived with their three children and her brother, David Davis.

 

1922: “BEAUTIFUL corner store with 2 apartments, reasonable rent. 3820 Lancaster ave. Apply 3602 Lancaster ave. Lee Smith.” (Inquirer, Nov. 8)

 

1923: “Greeley Home Open Daily. The headquarters of Raymond E. Greeley Post, No. 61, at 3820 Lancaster avenue. is open daily to former service men. The post is planning a membership drive.” (Inquirer, Feb. 18)

 

1930:
