An early building was built on here by William N. Tack about 1872. It apparently sat back from the street. The current building might have been added to the front of that building in 1891 when Thomas C. Sloan built a18x30 foot, 2 story “art gallery.”

            The second enumeration of the 1870 census in November 1870 recorded them at 401 N. 39th St.

            The house is not shown on the Hopkins Atlas published in 1872. The lot is labeled as owned by W. N. Tack.

1873, Oct. 14: Death of William B. Tack, 23 years old, of 3818 Lancaster Ave. He was a clerk and never married. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

1892, Mar. 25: Title transferred to Russel Duane by Edwin H. Shannon

            It was sold for $4,000 and a mortgage of $6,500. (Inquirer, April 5)

 

1895, Oct. 27: “The inaugural meeting of a musical society for the performance of light operettas, was held on Thursday last, at which some of the most prominent amateurs of West Philadelphia were present. The committee unanimously decided to give the first work, ‘Mrs. Speaker,” by Albert W. Borst. The composer of this tuneful operetta was conductor. Meetings will be held at Baring Hall [3818 Lancaster Ave.].” (Inquirer)

            Albert W. Borst lived at 3600 Hamilton St. There is a biography and photo on the page for that address.

            The 1900 census lists John William Schaal as a 43-year-old baker living at 923 S. 5th St. with his wife and two children. His parents were born in Germany. In 1910, he was widowed and living with his daughter at 3016 Girard Ave. He was retired. In 1920, they lived at 4924 Walnut St.
