3718-3720: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style doubles, stone facade over brick. Same builder as north side of street. Victorian wood porch across front; four dormers in slate-shingled mansard.”

            Edward Holland Johnston was married to Mary Roberts. In 1900, the Johnston family lived at 3821 Walnut St. Amelia and Elizabeth were still single. They were members of The Church of the Savior (Episcopal).

1887: Marriage of Emma H. Johnston to Edward John Carothers.

            In 1900, Emma was widowed with one child, Edward, who was born in May 1890 in Mexico. They were living with her family lived at 3821 Walnut St. They were members of The Church of the Savior (Episcopal).

1896, Oct. 14: Death of Jennie R. James, 48 years old. Funeral service at the home of her father, 3720 Hamilton St.

 

1898, April 28: Marriage of Susan Dear Johnston, daughter of Edward Holland Johnston, to James Roland James. They were married at the home of the bride by a minister from the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets.

 

1898, Sept.: House sold for $9,000

 

1899 Directory: Michael M. Sullivan of Morgan & Sullivan

In 1896, they lived at 3809 Filbert St.

 

1899, May 30: “William Sullivan, a youth of 3720 Hamilton St., was held in $800 bail… yesterday on the charge of assaulting Joseph McElwee of 3301 Market St. The two got into a quarrel…. McElwee was taken to Presbyterian Hospital in an unconscious condition having been knocked down. His nose was broken….” (Inquirer, Jun 1)

            They had an older daughter, Katharine M. Sullivan who married John Maxwell Peacock. She died in 1903 at age 24.

1913: Marriage license issued to Josephine Sullivan and Patrick J. Hayes

            They lived next door at 3718 Hamilton St. with her parents.

1930:

Ellen Kennedy             45        Servant

Virginia Baldwin          74        Single; 4 years of high school

Helen Baldwin             72        Single; 4 years of college

Ellen Kennedy             56        Maid, earned $700 in 1939, worked 56 hours in past week; single; 8 years of schooling; born in Eire

 

1943, Sep. 20: Death of Virginia Baldwin, 78 years old, daughter of Horatio Baldwin and Emma Gardner

            Helen Baldwin died Feb. 1, 1951 at age 83. She was living at Friends Hospital.
