3722-24, 3726-28: “three-story, four-register red brick Victorian doubles. Simple wood porch on 3722-24; elaborate Victorian porch on 3726-28. Pressed brick detail, corbelled brick cornice. Incised brownstone lintels”

1887 Directory: Carl T. Eben, linguist

            In 1880, he and his wife Antonia, were living in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, and she was born in Prussia. Her mother and sister, Albertina and Franscisca Hankel, lived with them.

1900:

C[arl] Theo[dor] Eben 64        Professor of literature; born in Germany [Württemberg], immigrated in 1853; owner with a mortgage

Antonia Eben              58        Married 28 years, no children; born in Germany

Francis Hantel             56        Sister-in-law; single; born in Germany

            In 1870, he was living in Ward 9, ED 25. He was a professor of languages. In 1864, he published German translations of Edger Allan Poe’s poems “Raven,” “Bells,” and “Leonore.”  He also translated “Gottlich Mittelberger's journey to Pennsylvania in the year 1750 and return to Germany in the year 1754, containing not only a description of the country according to its present condition, but also a detailed account of the sad and unfortunate circumstances of most of the Germans that have emigrated, or are emigrating to that country” which was published in 1898.

 

1909, Dec. 11: Death of Carl Eben, 73 years old, of 3722 Hamilton St. He was a Dr. of Philosophy (i.e., Ph. D.) and was born in Germany. He was buried at Woodlands Cemetery.

 

1910, Real Estate For Sale: “For Home Seekers – 3722 Hamilton St., 11 rooms, laundry, porch, side alley, delightful location. Apply within.” (Inquirer, March 13, 1910)

 

1910:

Antonia Eben              69        Widowed; born in Germany, immigrated in 1869; owner, free of a mortgage

Francisca Hantel          68        Sister; art[?] embroidery at home; single; born in Germany, immigrated in 1869

            They were the daughters of Albert and Albertine (or Elbertine) Hantel. In 1870, they lived with their mother. They were born in Berlin and were age 24 and 22.

 

1920:

Frank L. Miller             55        Locomotive engineer for railroad; owner with a mortgage

Ruth S. Miller              51

Julian F. Miller             26        Mechanical engineer for a steel company

Albert Jacobus             32        Boarder; pipe fitter

Ella Jacobus                 32        Boarder

            Frank Lewellen Miller was the son of William D. and Clara M. Miller. In 1880, they lived at 3212 Pearl St. He married Ruthanna Sharpless. In 1900, they lived at 3700 Mantua Ave. They had been married 11 years and had had 2 children, one of whom was deceased. In 1910, they lived at 3822 Brown St.

 

1930:

Horace Robins             40        Lodger; salesman in a department store; single; born in New Hampshire
