The History of the Building

 

3618-26: “five, two-and-one-half story, two-register mansarded brick rowhouse. Some have their original double wood and. glass paneled doors and/or their wood porches. 3618 has a projecting first floor bay. Each house has two dormers projecting from the mansarded roof; except for 3618, all mansards have original slate shingles.”

1876, May 29: Death of Samuel Lloyd Dent, 9 months years old, of 3626 Powelton Ave.  He was the son of Joseph H. and Mary E. Dent.  Burial was at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.

 

1877 Directory: Joseph H. Dent, salesman

            He died Feb. 13, 1878.  They may have been living with his wife’s parents at 202 N. 35th St.  For the history of the family, see the Powelton History Blog.

 

1878, Jul. 27: Death of William Hughes, 1 day old

 

1880:

Thomas Underwood    45        Blacksmith

Kate Underwood         43        Suffered from a paralysis; born in Maryland

Clara Underwood        19

Samuel Underwood     17        Apprentice machinist

Martha Munson           14        Servant; black; born in Maryland

            In 1870, they were living in Wilmington, Del.  The Philadelphia directories of 1880-1883 list him as a carriage seat maker, a wheelwright and finally as a foreman. 

 

1880, Oct. 6: Marriage of Clara Jane Underwood to Nathaniel Radcliffe Benson in Delaware

The 1903 directory of Wilmington lists her as his widow.  In 1908, She married William F. Hall.

 

1881, April 17: Death of Martha Munson, 15 years old, of 3626 Powelton Ave.

 

1881 Directory: Thomas Underwood

            The 1887 directory lists Samuel Underwood, machinist, living at 1536 Christian St.

 

1887 Directory: Harry Riley, inspector

                         Mary Riley, widow of Owen

                         Sarah Riley, dressmaker

 

1900:

James Darragh             40        House carpenter; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1876 [?], a naturalized citizen; owner with a mortgage

Emily Darragh             30        Married 2 years, no children; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1886

            James Darragh was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in December 1859.  He was baptised at the First Baptist Church in Newtown Township, Pa in 1875.  He married Emily Wilson in Philadelphia Nov. 30, 1898. (Inquirer, Dec. 3)

            In 1940, they lived at 922 S. 49th St.  They both reported having 8 years of schooling.

 

1930:

Patrick Merron             35        Engineer for a steam railroad; married at age 31; born in Irish Free State, immigrated 1911; owner, house valued at $5,000

Mary Merron                31        Married at age 27; born in Irish Free State, immigrated 1923

Joseph Merron             2 years, 4 months

Mary E. Merron           11 months

 

1950 Directory: James J. Adams

 

1960, June 9: Death of James J. Adams [McAdams], 49 years old
