The History of the Building

 

3618-26: “five, two-and-one-half story, two-register mansarded brick rowhouse. Some have their original double wood and. glass paneled doors and/or their wood porches. 3618 has a projecting first floor bay. Each house has two dormers projecting from the mansarded roof; except for 3618, all mansards have original slate shingles.”

1873 Directory: Eustice Sanguinetti, clerk

                         Percy A. Sanguinetti, draughtsman at 17 S. 18th St.

                                    This was the address for George C. Howard. The 1875 directory lists him as a supplier of perforating and punching machines. The 1868 directory lists him under steam engine builders and under hoisting machines. The Sanguinetti brothers moved around a lot. The 1874 directory lists Percy A. and E[dward] Eustace Sanguinetti were living at 3845 Warren St. Edward was a salesman at 3531 Lancaster Ave. which was a grocery store. They were born in Jamaica where the family was part of the community of Sephardic Jews. Percy A. Sanguinetti (1844-1910) listed in the 1871 Census of England living in Chatham, Kent. He was a 26-year-old, single fitter at the dockyard. The brothers and their siblings all came to Philadelphia. Later directories list Percy at several different addresses. He and his family ended up in Brooklyn where he died in 1910. Edward E. became a grocer and butcher and died in Philadelphia in 1909.

1894, Jan. 26: Death of Alexander Earl, 56 years old. He was buried at the Woodland Cemetery Vault.

1897, Dec. 23: Death of Annie M. Earl, 55 years old. She was buried in the Norristown City Cemetery.

 

1899 Ministerial Directory of the Baptist Churches: “Harris, William Theophilus, 3624 Powelton Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. – Born Philadelphia, Pa., Buck U., Pa., B. A., 1895; Lic. ’90, Ord. Sept. ’95. Frankford Ch., Philadelphia, Pa., P. Angora Ch., Philadelphia, ’95-’96; Powelton Ave. Ch. [3608-16 Powelton Ave.] Philadelphia, Pa., ’96--.”

            In 1900, he lived at 3736 Powelton Ave. with his wife and three young children. He was 27 years old.

 

1910:

                                    Charles C. Speel died in Philadelphia, Jan. 30, 1903. He was born about 1845.They were living at 811 N. 20th St.

 

1912, June 4: Marriage of Lillian Amanda Allsbach of Long Beach, Calif. to Henry William Speel. Her parents were deceased.

 

1920:

            In 1910, Anna Williams lived at 3832 Baring St. with her son Edward. He was 23 years old and a clerk for a railroad. She had had four other children, one of whom was deceased. Anna Sterling and her husband Samuel A. Sterling were boarders in the same house. He was a 62 year-old teamster and rigger. They only had one child, Edward A. Sterling.

            Ellen A. Campbell was Ann Sterling’s sister.

 

1921, Oct. 15: Death of Ellen A. Campbell. Funeral from the residence of Mrs. Anna M. Williams, 3624 Powelton Ave. Mass at St. Agatha's Church, 38th & Spring Garden.

 

1930:

David Pratt, Jr.             15       

            David Pratt, Sr.’s WWI draft registration form lists his birth date as Oct. 19, 1876. He was living at 419 Budd St. He was the sexton for the Northminster Presbyterian Church. He was 5’7” tall with brown eyes and dark brown hair.

            David Pratt, Jr. was baptized Feb. 28, 1915 at the Church of the Savior, Episcopal. He was born January 17, 1915.

 

1937, Feb. 28: Death of David Pratt, 60 years old, of 3624 Powelton Ave. He died from arterial sclerosis and was buried at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Pa. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets.)

            Margaret Pratt died Sept. 11, 1959.

 

1937, Dec. 3: Death of Frank William Schaffer, Jr., 2 years old, of 3624 Powelton Ave. He died from cerebral stenosis and was buried at Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Pa. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)
