1920, Jan.:  Rev. Robinson left Northminster Presbyterian to become pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Delhi, N.Y. He had previously been affiliated with the church in Delhi and returned to fill the position left vacant by the resignation of his father. He gave his final sermon at Northminster on March 28.

            Rev. Mackie was the son of Dr. Alexander John Howie Mackie and Alice B. (Cooper) Mackie. In 1900, they lived at 4938 Penn St., Frankford. In January 1920, Rev. Mackie was living in Haddonfield, N.J. with his mother, sister, and two sons. He was listed as widowed. He was pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Haddonfield.

            Rev. Joseph Raymond Waite was Assistant Minister under Rev. Mackie. He duties included visitation, leadership of young people’s activities and the men’s work. He left to go to Scots Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia.

1968 Reverse Directory: Rev. M. L. Gayton

            Rev. Miller Lee Gayton became pastor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in 1953. He served as their pastor for over 37 years.

 

1982, Dec. 3: Death of Cleo Blanche Gayton, 62 years old, wife of Rev. M. L. Gayton of 3504 Baring St.

            “CLEO GAYTON, CHURCH'S 'FIRST LADY'

            “Cleo Blanche Gayton, a church leader, educator and lecturer and wife of the Rev. M.L. Gayton, died Friday. She was 62 and lived in the Powelton Village section of West Philadelphia.

            “Gayton, the former Cleo Lockett, was a Christian educator and speaker in the United States and abroad. Her husband is pastor of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, 3500 Baring St.

            “A friend and Sunday School teacher at the church, Elizabeth Prior, described Gayton as ‘a very gracious first lady of our church for 29 years. She profoundly touched the lives of many at home and abroad. She was always bubbling over with concern for others. As a result of her concern for the youth of the church and as Mother of the Youth of the Church, three generations have been richly inspired under her guidance….’”  (Daily News, Dec. 7)
