The History of the Building

 

two-and-one-half story red brick Victorian house in front, middle, and rear sections, the last of which is probably a circa 1890 three-story addition. Front block has eaves from hipped roof; middle block, gabled roof; rear block, flat roof; front porch removed; rebuilt and enclosed with aluminum siding. Partial aluminum siding on second floor and dormer.”

1870:

Samuel Blair                46        Division master, Pennsylvania Railroad; born in Pa.; real estate: $4,500, personal property: $1,200

Mary R. Blair               45        Born in Pa.

Samuel Blair                17        Law student; born in N.Y.

            The 1867 directory lists them living at 3102 Baring St.  The 1868 directory lists him living at 314 N. 31st St.  Samuel died in 1885 when they were living at 674 N. 34th St.  Samuel Blair and Mary R. Zeig were married in 1844 in Cumberland Co., Pa.  She was from Carlisle, Pa.

 

1879 Directory (Fall, 1878): A. Robinson McIlvaine of McIlvaine Bros. (Henry C. and A. Robinson], drug mills at 1500 Hamilton St.

            The 1878 directory lists him at the corner of N. 33rd and Baring (401 N. 33rd St.)  His brother, Henry C. McIlvaine lived at 37256 Spring Garden St. and later at 3308 Hamilton St.

            In 1870, A. R. lived at 3317 Baring St. with his grandfather, Thomas Matlock, and his mother, and siblings.

            In 1920, Donald lived next door at 3211 Baring St.

            John G. McIlvaine was a partner with Wilson Eyre, 1911-1939.

1918, Nov. 27: Death of A. Robinson McIlvaine.  Services at St. Andrews Church, 36th and Baring Sts.

1942 Draft Registration: Wilbur S. Moore, 57 years old. He was born in Lewes, Delaware and was self-employed.

            He was the proprietor of nursing homes. In 1940, he was listed as a practical nurse running a home at 4024 Parish St. which he rented. It had eight residents.  He had four years of high school education. In 1943, he purchased 315 N. 35th St. but sold it in 1946. The 1950 directory lists him at both 3205 Baring St. and 3308 Baring St. However, the 1950 census lists him as a medical teach living in Warwick, Bucks Co. working at a hospital. When he died in 1954, he was living in Milton, DE. The information for the death certificate was provided by Mary James who lived at 3308 Baring St.
