The History of the Building

 

The land now occupied by 315-333 N. 34th St. and 3308-3310 Baring St. was previously the home of T. Hessenbruch. (See 3316 Baring St.)

 

1906, Dec. 28: Title for 315-333 N. 34th St. transferred to Amelia H. Hayes by Herman Hessenbruch, et al. by will

            In 1915, an Amelia H. Hayes applied for a passport at the American Consulate in Nice, France. She listed her home address as the Drexel Building in Philadelphia and listed her temporary address as Paris. She was born in Philadelphia Nov. 11, 1841 and left the U.S. in May, 1905.

 

1907, Feb. 26: Title for 315-333 N. 34th St. transferred to James F. Maguire by Amelia H. Hayes

             The 1908 directory lists a James F. Maguire as a builder at 708 Fidelity Mutual Life Building and living at 406 N. 63rd St.

 

1907, Mar. 26: Title for 315-333 N. 34th St. transferred to David R. Carson by James F. Maguire

            David R. Carson is listed in the 1908 directory as a carpenter living at 708 E. Clearfield.

 

315-333: “two-and-one-half story Colonial Revival style brick doubles. Wood porches with shared pedimented entries and pilasters on brick pedestals. Second-floor projecting bays; tripartite windows below irregularly-shaped gable; mostly pantiles over mansard roof. Some awnings added and porch balustrades removed. and pantiles replaced with asphalt shingles”

1922, Apr. 9: Death of Edwin F. Glenn, 71 years old, husband of Rebecca Campbell Marshall Glenn of 4524 Chestnut St., (formerly of 319 N. 34th St.). Funeral at Northminster Presbyterian Church with reception at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. Bird Moyer, 321 N. 34th St.

            "Former Assistant City Solicitor Dies at Age of 71

            "Edwin F. Glenn, lawyer and active worker in Presbyterian Church circles, died at his home, and 4524 Chestnut street, on Sunday night. He leaves a widow and three children. Funeral services will be held tomorrow in the Northminster Presbyterian Church, Thirty-fifth and Baring streets.

            "For many years, Mr. Glenn was identified with the law office of Representative George S. Graham, first as a student and later as a partner in private practice when Mr. Graham was District Attorney. In 1917, Mr. Glenn became associated with his son, Solomon F., in law practice. Mr. Glenn devoted the greater part of his time to office practice, seldom going into court.

            "Mr. Glenn was born in this city on December 1, 1850, the son of Colonel John F. Glenn, a Civil War veteran, and Eleanor Forebaugh, a representative of one of the old families of Philadelphia. After a period in the public schools, the young man took up the study of conveyancing in the law office of George W. Dedrick and later Mr. Graham's office, being admitted to the bar in January, 1878.”

            "Noted Authority on Corporate Law will be Buried Tomorrow

            "Edwin F. Glenn, a prominent attorney and an authority on corporation and real estate law, who died Sunday evening at his home, 4524 Chestnut street, will be buried tomorrow following services at the Northminster Presbyterian Church. Mr. Glenn was 71 years old. He was born in this city December 1, 1850.

            "In 1878 Mr. Glenn was admitted to the bar and for thirty-seven years he was associated with George S. Graham in the practice of law. At one time he was in charge of the conveying department of the City Solicitor's office. He retired, however, in 1899 to devote his entire time to his personal practice.

            "The death of Mr. Glenn was due to heart disease, which can find him to his home for the past 15 weeks. He was the son of Colonel John F. Glenn, who is prominent in local politics of a generation ago. Mr. Glenn is survived by his widow, who was Miss Rebecca Marshall Campbell, one daughter and two sons.

            "Mr. Glenn also was exceptionally active in the Presbyterian Church of the city. For four years he was an elder of the Olivet Presbyterian Church and for the past nine years he served in a similar capacity for the Northminster Presbyterian Church."

            John P. Yergy and Anne N. Greene were married in Philadelphia in 1918. In 1920, they were living at 203 N. 34th St. He was a 42-year-old foreman for the railroad.

            “Covering the proprietor, George Scheifele, 40, of 319 N. 34th st., with a revolver, two young bandits yesterday held u a grocery store at 34th and Hamilton sts., and escaped with $9 from the safe.” (Inquirer, June 5)

            Kathryn E. (Patrick) Smith was born in Philadelphia in 1909. She died in Ocean City, N.J. in 1984.

 

1957, Jan. 17: Death of Loretta Patrick, 73 years old, wife of Joseph E. Patrick and mother of Kathryn E. Smith. Loretta was born in Philadelphia.

            In 1940, they lived at 4414 Washington Lane. He was a bartender at a hotel.

 

1957, Oct. 10: Death of Joseph E. Patrick, 81 years old, husband of the late Loretto B. Patrick and father of Kathryn E. Smith of 319 N. 34th St. He was a retired bartender. He was born in Philadelphia. Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Agatha's Church, internment at Holy Cross Cemetery.

 

1964, Nov. 13: For sale “Powelton Village. 319 N. 34th st. Nice single family house, 9 rs. 2 bths. f/pl in lvrm. Nr. Drexel & Penn. ___ $10,500.” (Inquirer)
