1869, Oct. 6: Title for 3819 & 3823 Hamilton St. transferred to Charles A. Doerr by John S. McMullin

 

1874, Apr. 14: Title for 3819 & 3823 Hamilton St. transferred to John Bardsley by Charles A. Doerr

            The 1870 census lists John Bardsley as 33 years old and single. He was a retired hardware store owner. He claimed $30,000 in real estate and $20,000 in personal property. He was born in England. In 1874, he was Chairman of the Finance Committee of City Council (Inquirer, June 26). The 1880 census lists him as a manufacturer. He was living at 2916 N. 16th St. with his wife, two young daughters, and a servant.

mansarded two-and-one-half story, three-register, brick rowhouse. Porch removed. Brownstone sills, splayed brick lintels. Paired window in gabled dormer projecting from slate-shingled mansard.--- Contributing.”

1919, May 7: U. S. Army Transport arriving passenger on U.S.S. Liberaton departing from St. Nazaire, France:  Lester F. Gingrich, Pvt. Quartermaster Corp., Co. B, 103rd Sup. TN. He was the son of Harry Smith Gingrich of 3819 Hamilton St.

1930: Not counted in this census. It might have been temporarily vacant.

 

1930, Nov. 27: James Evans, age 24, was listed as a delivery person for the Philadelphia Tribune.

 

1938, June 3: Death of Carrie W. Evans, 36 years old, of 3819 Hamilton St. She was the wife of Edward Evans and the daughter of William Barksdale and Mary Lou Easley. She died from metastatic breast cancer.

 

1940:

Mary Barksdale            45[sic.] Black; married; 4 years of education; renting for $40 per month

James Barksdale          36        Son; helper at a garage; black; 8 years of education

Edward Evans             38        Son-in-law; counter manager at restaurant; black; married; 8 years of education

James Evans                21        [Grand]son; janitor at apartment building; black; single; 8 years of education

Thomas Evans            19        [Grand]son; black; single; 4 years of high school

Hayward Washington  42        Lodger; cook for private school; black; single; 8 years of education

            The 1930 census lists them all living at 649 N. 33rd St. she was 50 and widowed. All except Thomas were born in Georgia. In 1910, Mary and her children were listed in Militia District 164 in Wilkes, Georgia. The children were listed as mulatto. Mary was already widowed. In 1942, James registered for the draft. He was married to Lucy Barksdale and working for the Harry Wolfington Motor Co. at 3427 Chestnut St. He was living at 1609 N. Park Ave. He was born in Wilks Co., Georgia. Mary died in 1951 when she was living at 1609 N. Park Ave. She was born in Washington, Georgia in 1886. In 1942, Hayward Washington was also living at 1609 N. Park Ave. He listed Mary Washington of that address as his nearest contact.

1973: Bernice P. Leonard of 3819 Hamilton St. was a recent high school graduate who entered Penn State University (Phila. Tribune)

 

1999: Oct. 16: Establishment of the Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum at 3819 Hamilton St. and neighboring lots.

            Joseph Tiberino and Ellen Powell Tiberino, both artists, previously established “The Building,” a combination gallery and artists’ workplace at 3639 Spring Garden St.

            An interview and biography of Ellen Powell Tiberino appeared in the Inquirer on Nov. 13, 1988.
