The History of the Building

 

George Wiegand owned and built 3806-3816 Spring Garden St. and 3807-3817 Hamilton St.

 

3807-3817: “brick Victorian rowhouse with 3807 as L-shaped end to the development. All porches altered except 3815 and 3813. Brownstone sills, splayed brick lintels. Pressed brick belt course. Corbelled brick and metal cornices.---·contributing.”

1890 Directory: Roberts William G. working at, 53 S. 3d St.

 

1893 Directory: Maxwell J. Walter, cashier at S. 30th below Spruce St.

            It also lists John Maxwell’s Sons, granite & bluestones, S. 30th below Spruce St. It only mentions James
T. Maxwell for the company. He is listed as living in New York.

            The 1891 directory lists J. Walter Maxwell as a clerk living at 3251 Chestnut St. The 1887 directory lists him at 3731 Fairmount Ave.

William Lilly                52        Retail lumber merchant; owner with a mortgage

Martha Meharg Lilly    51        Married 25 years, 1 child; parents born in Ireland

William Meharg Lilly   23        Lawyer with own office; single

[illegible] Smith            54        Servant; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1889

            The 1900 census shows them living at 1729 Bainbridge St. In 1880, William S. Lilly lived with his parents at 3412 Haverford St. [Ave.] He was a salesman in a grocery store. His father, Hugh, was a foreman at a mill.

 

1911 Directory: Lilly William M., lawyer, 707 Franklin Bank building

                         Lilly William S., clerk

            When he registered for the WWI draft, he was married and living at 752 Wynnewood Rd. in Philadelphia. He was a teacher and lawyer for the Pennsylvania Board of Education in Harrisburg.

 

1920:

William S. Lilly            61        Lumberyard merchant; owner, free of a mortgage

Martha Lilly                 61        Parents born in Ireland

Mary E. Hoffman        49        Servant; divorced; born in Ireland

 

1927, Mar. 27: Death of William S. Lilly, 68 years old, of 3817 Hamilton St. He was the son of Hugh Lilly and Sarah Dunlap. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

 

1930:

Martha Lilly                 71        Widowed; parents born in N. Ireland; owner, house valued at $3,500.

Mary E. Hoffman        60        Maid; divorced; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1871

 

1940:

Martha Lilly                 80        Widowed; renting for $40 per month

Mary E. Hoffman        70        Housework; widowed [sic.]

 

1941, Oct. 28: Death of Martha M. Lilly, 83 years old, of 3817 Hamilton St. Burial at Mt. Moriah Cemetery
