The History of the Building

3816-3820: “three-story two-register brick rowhouse. Wood lintels, sills and box cornice. Victorian wood porches and first-floor full-height windows with some alterations to 3820.”

            The 1870 census lists B. H. Pittfield, a 48-year-old bank clerk. He owned $40,000 in real estate and had $5,000 in personal property.

1898: “SICK SOLDIERS BY THE SCORE. Governor’s Train Here With Men For The Hospitals. PRACTICAL HELP WITH SYMPATHY. List of the Sick, With Details of the Plan of Removal from Fever Camps… On the train were 74 sick soldiers, all of them gathered from the fever-infested camp at Chickamauga [Georgia]. Of this number, 42 were too ill to sit up, and of the 33 classed as convalescents many were too weak to stand upon their feet and had to be assisted to the waiting ambulances by their comrades….
