3814 Spring Garden Street

 

George Wiegand owned and built 3806-3816 Spring Garden St. and 3807-3817 Hamilton St. However, 3806 and 3808 were torn down and replaced in 2012.

 

1885, Oct. 3: Title for 3814 Spring Garden St. transferred to George Wiegand by George E. Goldbeck, et al.

 

1886:  Mechanics’ Liens: “Geo. Wiegand, owner and cont – Wm J. Kramer & Co. claimants, 6 bldgs S s Spring Garden st 50 ft to 134 ft W of 38th st…. [$]49” (Phila. Builders’ Guide, Aug. 2) (This refers to 3806-3816 Spring Garden St.)

 

1886: “Geo. Wiegand, builder… [has] sold 5 nine-room houses on Thirty-eighth and Spring Garden streets, for $5000 [each].” ((Phila. Builders’ Guide, Dec. 13). This refers to 3806 and 3810-3814 Spring Garden St. and 3815 Hamilton St.

 

“Brick façade has been painted. All original porch elements have been removed and replaced; only the porch roof remains. Pressed brick belt course (rope over Greek key design) at second story; stylized flower at third story window heads. Corbelled brick ‘brackets’ below molded (metal?) cornice.”

1886, June: “F. H. McCann, 3811 Lancaster avenue, real estate broker, made a sale this week of a dwelling-house, 3814 Spring Garden street, for $5,000.” (Builders’ Guide, June 7)

 

1896, July 1: “In St. Agatha’s Roman Catholic Church, Thirty-eighth and Spring Garden streets, at noon yesterday, Miss Maria McCann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. McCann, 3814 Spring Garden street, was married to Dr. William J. O’Brien, 1763 Frankford avenue. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. A. McFaddon. The bride entered the church on the arm of her father, by whom she was given away. She wore white silk with hat to match and carried a bouquet of roses and lilies of the valley. The groom was attended by his brother, Dr. Michael O’Brien, as best man. A breakfast followed at the home of the bride’s parents. They will be at home at 1763 Frankford avenue, after September 1.” (Inquirer)
