The History of the Building

 

Before the 1880s, the house numbers on this block changed several times.

 

3812-3814: “two-story-Italianate double house with S-shaped bracketed and dentil1ated cornice…. 3814: Alterations to first-floor, porch removed. Does not have crossarm.--- Contributing.”

1867, Aug. 20: Title transferred to Robert C. Ross by Josephine M. Maul.

            Josephine Maul was the wife of Joseph S. Maul. They lived next door at 3812 Hamilton St. which they also owned.

 

1868 Directory (Fall 1867): Maul Joseph S., N. 38th corner of Hamilton, alderman, 3941 Lancaster Ave.

            The 1867 directory lists his home as N. 39th near Powelton.

            John W. Smith was probably Wealthy (Smith) Ross’s brother.

            Robert C. Ross enlisted in the 82nd Pennsylvania Reg., Co. C infantry in Aug. 1861.

 

1870, July 16: Title transferred to Sehas [?} Smith by Sheriff

            Later, title transferred to Edward Q. Smith, by will by Sehas [?} Smith

 

1875 Dir.: Robert C. Ross, weighmaster [listed 3826]

                        The 1870, 1871, and 1872 directories list him as weighmaster at N. 30th near Market St. and living at 3806 [sic] Hamilton St. The 1868 and 1873 directories have Hamilton near Lancaster.

1909: Death of Katharine S. Ross, 22 years-old, daughter of Harry and Laura Ross. She died from epilepsy.

Laura J. Ross                49        Married 27 years, three children, two surviving

Marion W. Ross           21        Cashier at department store

            The 1930 census lists them living at 3800 Spring Garden St. Harry was retired. Marion was 41 and single. Laura Jane (McCaraher) Ross died July 16, 1935. She was 74.

 

1935, July 16: Death of Laura Jane (McCaraher) Ross, age 74.

 

1941, June 8: Death of Harry Walton Ross, 80 years old, of 3814 Hamilton St.

 

1948, Dec. 22: Title transferred to James Gallagher by Fidelity Phila. Trust Co.
