3701-3719 are shown on the 1878 Scott Atlas. The 1872 G. M. Hopkins Atlas shows the land owned by the church on N. 38th St.

 

3701-19: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style doubles; stone facade over brick. First-floor Victorian porches; some altered-(3703, 3705-07, 3709, 3719); four registers, slate- shingled mansard (3701, 3705-07, 3709 asphalt); slightly arched dormer windowheads. All built by the same developer.”

1881 Directory: Edwin Want, clerk

            The 1885 directory lists Edwin E. and Francis Want as opticians living at 1647 S. Broad St. About 1886, Edwin moved to New York City where he was an optician. The 1891 directory for New York lists him as president of the E. Want Optical Co. He died there in 1906, but a death certificate was filed in Philadelphia. He was the son of Richard Want and Maria Arnold.

 

1881, June: Deed transferred from Alexander Whilldin to Danielia W. Hand.

            Alexander Whilldin & Sons sold cotton, wool and yarns at 126 Chestnut St. Alexander was listed at N. 15th and Jefferson in the 1881 directory. He sold 3707 Hamilton in March of the same year.

 

1885, March: Deed transferred from Danielia W. Hand to Franklin Hand.

            In 1910, they lived with Hazel’s father, William J. Downs (age 68, widowed, a bank clerk), and brother, A. Widden Downs (age 27, a physician in general practice), at 4204 Girard Ave.

            In 1930, Hazel was living in New Haven, Conn.

            In 1920, Herman and Eva Wiedenman were living at 3813 Baring St. He was a modeler in a talking machine factory. Eva was born in Conn. Herman’s parents were born in Germany.

            George William Pine, Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio. However, he lived with his parents at 3206 Powelton Ave. until his married Clara R. Mathews in 1921. He was working for the family business, Pine Brothers confectioners, at 1630 Market St. His father, George William Pine, Sr., was one of the Pine Brothers who were known for their cough drops. In 1942, registered for the draft when they were living at 3649 Lancaster Ave. He served in the Navy from June 1918 to Sept. 1921.
