History of the Building

 

1896, Nov. 17: “Mr. John Avery has broken ground on the north side of Spring Garden street, east of Thirty-seventh street, for four high grade dwellings. These houses will be three stories, have fancy brick fronts and will measure 16x63 feet each.” (Inquirer)

 

3633-3639: “two-and-one-half story, Pompeiian brick, porch-fronted, Late Queen Anne house with overhanging second-story above steel lintel of porch. Second-floor, three-sided bay with Colonial Revival swags. Central pediment of pressed metal above: central dormer. All infilled porches”

Previous Residents

 

1897, June 7: Title transferred to Mary J. Ruby by John Avery, etc.

            Mary J. Ruby was the wife of John C. Ruby. In 1900, they lived at 1833 Franklin St. He was a confectioner.

 

1899: For Rent: “3633 Spring Garden st., 12 rooms….. $45.00 [per month]” (Inquirer, April 23)

 

1900: Not in census

 

1903, Oct. 18: Death of Martha E. Dunsmoor, 80 years old, of 3633 Spring Garden St. widow of Samuel Dunsmoor

            Her estate was valued at $7,200 (Inquirer, Nov. 6, 1903)

            The 1895 directory lists her at 118 N. 34th St. She is listed as widowed in the 1880 census (at 114 N. 34th). The 1900 census lists her at 3629 Spring Garden St.

 

1905: Mr. W. F. Adams was among those awarded a watch for solving a puzzle. (Inquirer, Dec. 12)

 

1909, Dec. 31: Title transferred to John Ennis by Mary J. Ruby

            Then immediately transferred to George W. Watt.

 

1910:

James T. Jarrett            55        Wholesale coal proprietor; New York; renting

Mary L. Jarrett             56        Married twice; current marriage of 6 years, 4 children, 2 surviving; mother born in VA

Mary K. Calderwood   21        Stepdaughter

            They previously lived at 3625 Spring Garden St. The 1909 Directory lists him as working for James T. Jarrett & Co., sales agents for Lilly Coal Co., 720 Arcade Building.

1912, Mar. 5: Title transferred to J. Rue Watt by George W. Watt

 

1912, Mar. 21: Title transferred to Rebecca J. Van Horn by J. Rue Watt

 

1913, Nov. 17: Title transferred to Sally R. Smith by order of Sheriff by Rebecca J. Van Horn
