1868, Oct.
17: Title for 3607-3613 Baring St. transferred to Samuel P. Ferree by Jacob
Haines and Goldbrick, et al.
Samuel
P. Ferree was a real estate investor. In
the 1870 census he listed his occupation as “retired merchant” although he was
only 34. He lived at 3514 Spring Garden St. His father, James B. Ferree, who lived at 3404 Spring Garden St. was also a real estate
investor.
1869, Sep.
30: Title transferred to Nathan Stretch by Samuel P. Ferree
Nathan
Stretch was a carpenter and builder who lived at 3734 Haverford Ave.
(Mantua). In the 1870 census, he claimed
real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $1,000.
3607-3609: “two-and-one-half
story, Second Empire-style double. Porch removed; slate shingles of mansard
replaced with asphalt. Double bracketed cornice. Stone facade over brick. Same
developer as 3611-13.”

The 1870 census lists
Merklee as having a door and sash factory.
He claimed $20,000 in real estate and $2,000 in personal property. He was 43 years old.

The 1872 directory lists Benjamin J.
Williams and Benjamin J. Williams, Jr. were manufacturers of blinds at 16 N. 6th
St. Benjamin, Sr. would have been about
58 years old. He was living at 1004 N. 6th
St. Benjamin, Jr. was living in Tioga.

Phoebe (Paull) Hanckel did in Feb.,
1880 She was 24 years old. She died of
cholera. Her death was reported in the
1880 census Mortality Schedule from Albemarle, Va.
Rev. Dr. George A. Paull was born in
Wheeling, West Virginia. He received his
education at Princeton University and Seminary. He died in 1912. Before his death, he had been pastor of the
Upper Montclair (N.J.) Presbyterian Church.
He was survived by his wife. (New

Anna G. Paull married Samuel Morrow
Palmer about 1872. He died March 4,
1875. In 1870, he lived with his father
at 3204 Arch St.
1880: Death of Phebe W. Hanckel, 5 months years old, daughter of
E. R. Hanckel and the late Phebe W. Hanckel. (Phila. Inquirer, July 7, 1880)
Edward R. Hanckel died in 1891 at
the age of 33. At the time of his death,
he had been associated with the Passenger Department of the Pennsylvania
Railroad. He managed the advertising

twice married: Miss Vielie in 1861 (3 children) Mary M.. Morse, 9/22/1875 in
Elmira, N.Y. -one child Paul, born 1876.” (History

In 1870 and 1880, he lived in
Warren, Pa. where he was a lawyer. In
1880, he was 42 and his wife, Mary, was 30.
The census lists two sons: Mortimer (Mortie, age 13) and Paul (3). Mortimer was from his previous marriage. A genealogy lists a third son, Junius P.
Clark. Mary Clark was born in N.Y.

1901: Clayton Cowgill Wilson received a B.S. in

1906, Feb. 11: Death of Edward Howell Wilson, 53 years old, of
3609 Baring St. He was buried at Dover, Del. (Phila. Inquirer, Feb. 12, 1906)
His will left his entire estate,
valued at $150,000, to his wife. (Phila. Inquirer, Feb. 20, 1906) This is equivalent to several million dollars
in 2011.
“EDWARD
HOWELL WILSON died at his residence, 3609 Baring Street, Philadelphia, February
11, i906. He was born near Dover, Del., March 7, 1852. He was an only son of
Edward Warner Wilson, of Dover, and Sarah Howell, of Philadelphia. The family
came to Philadelphia in 1856, where Mr. Wilson made his home until the time of
his decease. In 1870 Mr. Wilson was graduated at the private school of Eastburn
and Norris (formerly Caleb Hallowell's school), and soon afterwards secured a
position with Charles J. Matthews, iron broker, remaining with the above firm
until early in the year 1875. In this year Mr. Wilson entered into the iron
brokerage business under the firm name of E. H. Wilson & Co., having two
partners. In the year 1895 the firm dissolved. Mr. Wilson continued the
business under the same firm name, and was active up to the time of his
decease. All who were privileged to enjoy an intimate acquaintance with Mr.
Wilson soon discovered his sterling qualities of mind and heart, and confided
in him absolutely, with the assurance that their confidence could not be, as it
never was, misplaced; and his beautiful life, so full of sympathy and
generosity, incited desire for closer relationship to all who were brought in
contact with him, and his many friends will be glad to bear testimony to the
fact that his sincerity and uprightness of character conformed to the highest

second concert this year, scheduled for March 8, the soloist will be young
Arthur Howell Wilson, the Pennsylvania College Junior, who played with such
success in Weightman Hall last winter. He is a pianist; his professional career
may be said to have begun already, though he is not yet out of College, and
with more than the usual promise of high attainment. Last year he played the
Mendelssohn concerto with Mr. Pohlig's orchestra, and this year it will very
probably be the difficult Rubinstein concerto which he will perform.”
1915, May 18: Death of Sarah Throop Munro Cowgill, 92 years old,
widow of Clayton A. Cowgill; internment in Dover, Del.
1915: Arthur Howell Wilson received a B. S. degree from the
University of Pennsylvania. He was a pianist
and a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity.
1916, June 24: Marriage of Nathalie Wilson to Robert Clarkson
Clothier, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarkson Clothier. Clarkson Clothier was the nephew of Isaac
Clothier, co-founder of Strawbridge and Clothier.
They were married at tabernacle
Presbyterian Church. The maid of honor
was Mary T. Janney Coxe (Mrs. Spencer L. Coxe) who grew up at 3412 Hamilton St.
After the wedding, there was a reception at the home of the bride. After a wedding trip, the new couple settled
