History of the Building

 

1868, Oct. 17: Title for 3607-3613 Baring St. transferred to Samuel P. Ferree by Jacob Haines and Goldbrick, et al.

            Samuel P. Ferree was a real estate investor. In the 1870 census he listed his occupation as “retired merchant” although he was only 34. He lived at 3514 Spring Garden St. His father, James B. Ferree, who lived at 3404 Spring Garden St. was also a real estate investor.

 

1869, Sep. 30: Title transferred to Nathan Stretch by Samuel P. Ferree

            Nathan Stretch was a carpenter and builder who lived at 3734 Haverford Ave. (Mantua). In the 1870 census, he claimed real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property valued at $1,000.

 

3607-09: “two-and-one-half story, Second Empire-style double. Porch removed; slate shingles of mansard replaced with asphalt. Double bracketed cornice. Stone facade over brick. Same developer as 3611-13.”

            The 1868-’73 directories list Benjamin F. Shattuck of Warren, Kirk & Co. living at the American Hotel. Earlier directories list B. F. Shattuck as a “gravel roofer.”

 

1871, Apr. 14: Title transferred to William H. Albertson by Benjamin F. Shattuck

            The 1868 and 1876 directory list Albertson as a carpenter. The 1877 directory lists him as a plasterer.

1885, July 8: Death of Anne Bennett, 82 years old, of 3607 Baring St. Burial at Greenwood Cemetery, N.Y.

            In 1895, he was living at 2324 N. Broad St. and in 1900, he was a boarder living at 3810 Powelton Ave.

            In 1900, he lived at 3216 Baring St. with his family.

 

1900: this house was not covered in the census

            The house had been offered for rent and was probably empty.

1911, Sept. 3: Death of John Price, 54 years old. “Relatives and friends, also Potter Lodge, No. 441; F. and A. M.: Melita Chapter, No. 284; Corinthian Chasseur, No. 53, and A. A. O., N. M. S. are invited to attend the funeral services at his late residence,” 3607 Baring St. (Phila. Inquirer, 9/5/1911)

            “Brother Price was born in Port Glenone, County Entronie, Ireland, February 14, 1857, and died at his home, 3607 Baring Street, Philadelphia, September 3, 1911. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, September 6, under the auspices of Potter Lodge, No. 441, F. & A. M. Brother Price conducted a retail grocery store at 25th & Callowhill Streets, after which he entered wholesale grocery, which he continued for fourteen years. Tumor on brain caused his demise, and surviving him are his wife, one son, ten years of age, and three sisters In Ireland. Brother Price was a very prominent member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church; a member of West Philadelphia Business Men's Association; Philadelphia Bourse; Trades' League, and Wholesale Grocers' Association. Interment was made at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.”

            John Walton Price married Elizabeth Field at St. Philip’s Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia on June 10, 1926. He was living in Wayne, Pa.

1922, Sept. 4: Death of Alice B. Price, widow of John Price. Internment was at Innisrush, County Antrim, Ireland, Sept. 6.

1929, July 29: Death of Joseph Garvey, 10 years-old, burial at Calvary Cemetery.

 

1928, May 3: Dr. Joseph P. Garvey was chairman of the organization committee of the annual banquet and dance of the West Philadelphia Chapter, No. 344, Knights of Columbus. He also served as toastmaster. (Inquirer)

            In 1934, he served at chairman of the chapter. In 1935, he was one of three members from Philadelphia chosen to attend the Supreme Convention of the K. of C. in New York. (Inquirer)

            Mary Connor and Joseph Peter Garvey were married in Philadelphia in 1915. In 1920, they lived at 3305 Spring Garden St. Mary’s mother, Nora Connor, and her brother, James L. Connor, lived with them. Mary’s father was a railroad engineer. He died in 1917. In 1900 and 1910, the Connor family lived at 3929 Fairmount Ave. Before her marriage, Mary was a teach at St. Agatha’s Parochial School, 38th and Spring Garden Sts.

Mary Felicitas Garvey, née Connor (1885-1944)

 

1944, June 16: Death of Mary F. Garvey, 58 years old, wife of Dr. Joseph P. Garvey and daughter of Nora (nee Barry) and the late James Connor. of 3607 Baring St. Solemn Requiem Mass at St. Agatha's Church, burial in New Cathedral Cemetery.

            “Mrs. Mary Garvey, wife of Dr. Joseph P. Garvey, of 3607 Baring st. and 224 Ocean av.,, Ocean City, N. J., died Friday in Presbyterian Hospital after an illness of three months. She was 58.

            “Mrs. Garvey, who before her marriage was a teacher at St. Agatha’s Parochial School, 38th and Spring Garden sts., was well known in Catholic social and charity circles.

“Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, John F. Garvey, now in the Navy, and two daughters, Mary Agnes Garvey and Rita Theresa Garvey….” (Inquirer, June 19)

            Joseph Peter Garvey died Jan. 19, 1954, at St. Francis Country House, Darby, Pa. His home address was given at 6127 Nassau Rd. Philadelphia.

 

1951, Sep. 30: Title transferred to Hilary E. and Gertrude C. Henninger (1/2 share) and C. Thomas and Barbara J. Gruning (1/2 share) by Joseph P. Garvey by survivors

            In 1942, Hilary E. Henninger registered for the draft from 3616 Baring St. He lived there again in 1950. He entered the service in July 1942 when he was living at 208 N. 34th St. He served overseas from July 1944 to January 1946.

 

1954, Jul. 13: Title transferred to Hilary E. and Gertrude C. Henninger by Hilary E. and Gertrude C. Henninger and C. Thomas and Barbara J. Gruning

 

1956, Oct. 15: “Powelton Neighbors, a newly formed civic group composed of teachers, church workers and professional persons, have set up a program to save their 20-block area, bounded by 33d and 38th sts. and Lancaster and Haverford aves., from becoming a slum….

            “A welcoming committee to greet and assist new residents is being set up and a rental register for apartments that meet the organization’s standard is being compiled. Hilary Henninger, of 3407 Baring st., is chairman of Powelton Neighbors.” (Inquirer)

 

1960: Hilary Henninger was co-chair of the Housing and Zone committee of Powelton Neighbors

 

1966, Sep. 4: Death of Hilary E. Henninger of 3607 Baring St., husband of Gertrude G. Henninger. He was born in Gowan City, Pa. Burial at West Laurel Hill Cemetery. He was 49 years old.
