3621-3623: “three-story, double, original porches removed; 3621 - 'now have oversized mansarded canopy. It also has had its original cornice removed and covered with aluminum. 3623 has its original cornice with applied decorative wood soffit, fascia and brackets.

            The 1867 directory lists T. Brantley Langton of Langton & [Oswald] Seidensticker’s English and Classical Academy, 1009 & 1011 Chestnut; home, 142 N. 10th St. The 1873 directory lists him as Principal of the West Penn Square Academy (Third National Bank Building, Market and Merrick Sts.). In 1880, he was teaching at 1613 Chestnut St. He was living alone in June, 1870.

            Evans and his family probably only lived here briefly. In December 1891, they purchased 206 N. 34th St. and moved there. They moved to 223 N. 34th St. by 1900. (See his biographical information there.)

            In 1880, Eleanor, Bessie and another of Eleanor's daughters, Mary Maud Montgomery, lived at 3816 Lancaster Ave. Eleanor was a nurse and Bessie was a saleslady. (ED 489, 24)  The 1895 directory lists Elinor M. Ramsey, nurse, living at 3750 Lancaster Ave. In 1870, they lived with Eleanor's husband, John, who was a carpenter. (Ward 26, ED 85, 72)  In 1920, Bessie was still a saleslady in a department store and living in an apartment at 229 S. 45th St. She was 57.

            Horace W. Baker was the son of Henry A. and Mary A. Baker. Henry was a seaman whose father was born in England. Mary was born in N.Y. In 1880, they lived at 15 Haverford Ave., Philadelphia. In 1900, they were boarders at 6068 Girard Ave. Horace was an architecture sculptor. In January, 1920, Horace and his mother were living with his cousin, George Knight, and his family at 422 Courtland St. Horace stated was still married, but not living with his wife. He was a model maker. Horace and Laurette were apparently divorced because he remarried in Ohio in October, 1920.

 

1920:

            In 1930, Margaret Conway lived at 1508 N. 13th St. with her brother, Peter, who was a lawyer and their sister Bridget. That census states they were born in Northern Ireland.

 

1930:

Michael Campbell        62        Watchman at department store; married at age 31; born in N. Ireland, immigrated in 1887; renting for $60 per month

Elizabeth Campbell     51        Married at age 26; born in N. Ireland, immigrated in 1879

            Michael Campbell and Elizabeth Lynch were married in Philadelphia in June, 1904. In 1910, they lived at 2201 Spring Garden St. Michael was listed as a saloon operator. It lists his date of immigration as 1890 (1920 ways 1885) and Elizabeth’s as 1882 (1920 says 1878). In 1920, they lived at 610 N. 34th St. (Mantua). Michael was the proprietor of his own restaurant. He immigrated in 1885 and became a citizen in 1890. Elizabeth immigrated in 1878 and became a citizen in 1905. The household also included Mary Lynch, Elizabeth’s mother. She was 73 and immigrated in 1878. Michael died August 26, 1938 when they were living at 747 N. 36th St. (Mantua). The death certificate identified him as a watchman at Wanamaker’s department store. He was the son of Frank Campbell and Fannie McKnight. The cause of death was cancer of the tongue.

 

1941: William Henry Fry (b 12/8/1854), died 1/14/1941 in 3621 Powelton Ave. His wife, Cornelia Clark Goodier (1851-1931) died in Roslyn, Montgomery Co.

            Their son lived at 3419 Baring St. from about1919 to 1959.
