The History of the Building

 

3410-3420 Race St. are shown on the 1872 G. M. Hopkins Atlas. They were built by builders, John Shedwick and his son James C. Shedwick who lived at 3624 Baring St. in 1870. They built a home for themselves at 3408 Race St. and moved there about 1872.

 

3414-3416: “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style stone double - same as 3410 - 3412 except for porch alterations; 3414 enlarged; 3416 rebuilt with Colonial Revival detail, circa 1895, and extended around side to brick one story addition.”

1872 Directory (Fall, 1871): Joseph E. Goodman, clerk at the corner of Market and N. 30th, home: Race near N. 35th St.

            Enlisted in the Twenty-eighth Pennsylvania Infantry Dec 1861, transfer to the 147th Infantry Oct. 1862; promoted to first sergeant July 4, 1863. At battles of Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, Lookout Mountain. In Nov. 1863 at Ringgold Gap, Ga., his wounded leg was amputated by his brother Henry Earnest Goodman, a surgeon, on the battlefield. He subsequently served in the Veterans Reserve Corp; second lieutenant on Sept. 16, 1864; honorable discharge August 8, 1866.

            He married Emma R. Gubert in Oct. 1869. In 1870, he was living with his brother at 53 N. 34th St.

1875, Jun. 11: Death of Emma R. (Gubert) Goodman, 27 years old, wife of Joseph E. Goodman

            Bertha B. Goodman was actually born in England. In 1890, they lived at 3307 Arch St. and from 1894 to at least 1910 at 3309 Arch St.
