3408-10: “Second Empire-style, two-and-one-half story double - built by same developer as 3400-02 and 3404-06; porch, full- height windows, and slate shingles in excellent condition.”

The History

 

1866, June 14: Transfer of lots 3400, 3402, 3404, 3406, 3408 and 3410 Baring from Richard Smethurst to William Sellers and John Sellers Jr.

            The 1858 Directory lists Richard Smethurst, conveyancer & accountant, 144 S 4th St.

 

1873, Jan. 24: Pennsylvania Fire Insurance Co. survey #9874 for 3408 and 3410 Baring St. Insured value of $5,000 each payable to Thomas D. Crispin.

            It notes that the kitchen (room #2) has “a cooking range, iron sink, hot and cold water.” (Historical Society of Pennsylvania)

 

1874, October 21: Deed transferred from Thomas D. Crispen to Elizabeth Halliday.

            The 1870 census, 2nd enumeration in November shows them living at 115 N. 10th St. He reported $50,000 in real estate and $10,000 in personal property. The 1850 and 1860 censuses list his occupation as “saddler.”  The 1861 directory lists him as selling “saddles, harness, &c.” at 1026 Market St.

 

1889, May 25: Deed transferred from William P. Henry (will of Elizabeth Halliday) to Fred & Dollie (wife) Willits.

            The 1887directory lists Frederick Willits as a clerk living at 743 S. 22nd St. He was the son of Rev. A.A. Willits, a clergyman, orator, lecturer and author, who was known as the “Apostle of Sunshine” because of his optimistic view of life.

1896: Permit issued to “George W. Roydhouse, contractor,… one-story brick kitchen, 10.6x15.9, at 3408 Baring street.” (Inquirer, Aug. 14)

            Howard Newkumet (2027 N. Bouvier St.) married Marion B. Hennig (4123 Parrish St.) in Philadelphia in December, 1916. In 1917, he registered for the WWI draft from 3040 N. Bambrey St. He was working for Acetylene Gas Welders, State and Kilburn Rds., Philadelphia. He was the son of John A. and Edith Newkumet. His father was a machinist. In 1900, they lived at 2361 N. 21st St. Marian B. Hennig’s father was also a machinist at a roller bearing factory. In 1910, they live at 4123 Parish St. The 1921 directory lists him working for the {Philadelphia Welding Co. and living at 4123 Parrish St.

            Anna M. Mintzer was the daughter of St. John W. Mintzer (1829-1894), whose papers are at the College of Physicians (http://www.collphyphil.org/FIND_AID/hist/histjwm2.htm).

            Dorothy Evelyn Newkumet married Edward George at the Northminster Presbyterian Church in 1954. In 1940, his family lived at 3602 Hamilton St.

            Ross Carey graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. in 1929 with a B.A. in History and Political Science. He was from Oil City, Pa. In college he played in the college band and was a chapel organist. He was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity. (Allegheny College Kaldron) His father was a laborer in a machine shop in 1920. He died in 1984 in Toledo, Ohio. His death certificate lists his occupation as physician.

1940, WWII Draft Registration:  Howard Newkumet, born Nov. 18, 1891. He worked at (owned?) the Philadelphia Welding Co., 2419 N. Broad St. He was 6 feet tall and weighed 155. He died in March, 1978 when he was living in Ocean Grove, N.J.

            Kennth B. Newkumet joined the Army in Jan. 1945 and served until Oct. 1946. He was married and was an accountant or auditor with a post-graduate education.

            Harry J. Newkumet enlisted in the Army Air Corps in Nov. 1941 and served until Sept. 1945. He was single and working as a welder. He had 3 years of high school.

            Blair Howard Newkumet served on the U.S.S. Gleaves from Sept. 1944 to April 1944 then on the U.S.S. Los Angeles until March 1946.
