This house is no longer standing.

 

314-336 N. 31st St. were acquired by the Penlaun Corp. between about 1947-1950. The houses were torn down and the area sold to the Pennsylvania Laundry Co. about 1951. They are now part of Drexel Park.

1865 Directory: Peter Dampman, car builder

            The 1863 directory lists Peter and his son, John W. Dampman, as car builders living at 3329 Market St. Peter was listed there again in 1864.

 

1867 Directory: Peter Dampman, car builder

 Samuel T. Dampman, machinist

 

1867 June 13: Birth of Leilla Haller Dampman. She was baptized at Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church.

            In 1850, Peter, Alice and Samuel Dampman lived in Honey Brook, Chester, Pa. Peter and an older son, John, were blacksmiths. The 1867 directory lists John living at 3322 Chestnut St.

            In 1863, Samuel mustered as a Private with William Rich's company with the Pennsylvania Guard.

 

1872, Jan. 18: Birth of Edgar Roberts Dampman. He was baptized at Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church.

Henry S. Jefferys          26        Boarder; minister; born in N.J., father in N.J., mother in England

            Henry Scott Jefferys attended the University of Pennsylvania.

“Henry Scott Jefferys. A. B., 1879, M., 1882; Philomath. Soc.; Bowlman, 1874; prize for oratory (1); Teacher and Missionary Priest; founder of missions St. Matthias, Mayebashi, Japan; Christ Ch., Gendai; prof. of Latin Keiyo Univ.; later coil. in Kagoshima, Gasuma; author Japanese tract on the Resurrection; various newspaper and magazine articles; memo Red Cross (life) Peace Soc., Japan; vice-pres, Alumni Soc., Japan. 7 Minami Tera Machi, and Yokunya, St. Peter's Mission, Tokyo, Japan.”  (Univ. Pennsylvania Alumni Directory, 1917.)

            Jefferys died in 1920 in Tokyo, Japan.

            Lilla Garrett was the widow of Clarendon H. Garrett.

 

1903: Marriage license issued to Bertha McCurdy and Edgar R. Dampman

            Edgar died in 1907 from tuberculosis. They were living in Paoli.

 

1910:

Samuel L Dampman    69        Stationary engineer; owner, free of a mortgage

Elizabeth Dampman    69        Married 44 years, 2 children, 1 surviving

Lillia H. Garrett           42        Daughter; widowed

            In Aug. 1919, Elizabeth Dampman died in Atlantic City, N.J. She and Samuel lived at 6231 Carpenter St. with their grandson, LeRoy B. (or D.)  Garrett, a candy manufacturer, married Delphine Murray in 1922. Samuel died at their home in 1933.

1940:

George Dean               45        Salesman for wool dealer; negro; born in SC; 6 years of schooling

Margaret Dean             38        Negro; born in TN; 5 years of schooling

Edna Dean                  18        Negro; born in MD; 3 years of schooling

Robert Dean                  5        Negro; born in PA

            They were living in Philadelphia in 1935. In 1930, they lived at 4312 Wallace St. Their name was spelled “Deane.” George was working as a cook in a hotel. Margaret gave her state of birth as Ohio with her parents born in Tennessee. George and Margaret were both married twice. Edna was Margaret’s daughter. Her father was born in Maryland. In 1950, they lived at 3610 Fairmount Ave. George was a church minister. Edna was married. Her married name was Clay. She had a 7-year-old daughter but was separated from her husband.
