The History of the Building

 

3320-3322: “Italianate three-story double, originally may have been single residence. Building is stuccoed, originally bracketed wood cornice. 3222 has original porch and 3320 has circa 1950 major alterations to fenestration.”

1873, June 26: Title for 323-333 N 34th St. & 3312-3322 Hamilton St. transferred to Isaac Clothier by Lydia C. Biddle

 

1873 Directory: Samuel C. Henszey, Jr., physician

            The 1872 directory lists him as a druggist at 3511 Market St. His father was listed living at 954 N. 6th St. He was in the hardware business.

Joseph [Wilmer] Henszey 6      Son

            Samuel was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Col. of Pharmacy. He died in 1907 at the home of his son, J. Wilmer Henszey at 3216 Baring St. Samuel's father, also Samuel C., was a prominent banker. Joseph Henszey attended Friends Central and Drexel and began working at Baldwin Locomotive works. After 26 years there he had moved from foreman to chief inspector of locomotive construction.

            Laura Dock was the daughter of Gilliard Dock and Lavinia L. Bumbaugh who lived in Lancaster, Pa. In 1760, he was listed as a mechanical engineer with $8,000 in real estate and $30,000 in personal property. Laura apparently never married.

            In 1891, they lived next door at 3322 Hamilton St.

 

1895, January: Edward and Cecilia Brill purchase the property from her father, Francis K. Shippen (3313 Baring St.) for $5,000 which included a mortgage of $3,000.

1908, Jan. 2: Title transferred to Robert Hamilton by Edward Brill, & wife

            In 1930, J.W. and Henry were living in a large boarding house in Germantown.

 

1920, June 14: Marriage of Helen Allen Jones to Cash Edmund Drake, 26 years old, of Rochester, Washington, son of George and Eva Drake. They were married by Rev. Robert Johnston of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets.

 

1930:

1940:

Clarence H. Fritz         66        Medical doctor in private practice; 5 years of college; renting for $68/month

            This house was owned by Helen Fritz who lived next door at 3322. Clarence was her brother-in-law. Clarence and his brother, Jacob, lived with their parents at 6 W. Walnut Lane (near Preston and Green Sts.) in 1880. Their father was a real estate conveyancer.

 

1950, Dec. 21: Death of Helen Headrich, 78 years old

            She lived next door at 3322 Hamilton St. with her husband for many years. (See more there.)
