The History of the Building

 

This house was built about 1867. However, it was completely renovated and “modernized” later.

 

two-and-one-half story ,Second Empire style double, stucco over brick construction; originally slate-shingled mansard, now asphalt. Each house has first-floor projecting bay and dormers. Original T-shaped plan. Recessed section of 3304 filled in circa 1905 with three-story gabled bay. Pent over entrance added and 'rectangular second-floor projecting bay above original first-floor bay. Circa 1980 wood shingles on new bay. 1905 addition also has casement window with pent and dentillated cornice”

1856, Apr. 18: Title for 3305 Baring St. and 3306 & 3304 Hamilton St. transferred to John H. McIlvain by H. B. Baring

 

1866, Nov. 26: Title transferred to Thornton Pike by John H. McIlvain

            Thornton Pike was the son of Henry and Mary Pike.  He died in Yardley, Bucks Co. in 1885.  The property was inherited by his wife and then his daughter Caroline Pike Suplee (see below).  On her death it was inherited by her children including Thornton P. Suplee.  They sold the house in 1943.

            Samuel Hutchinson (1802-1873) was married to Rachel McIlvain (1806-1864), the daughter of Hugh McIlvain.

            “Samuel [H.] Hutchinson: A Conveyancer, real estate agent and later broker in the area of Mantua Village, although now might be considered the border of Powelton. In 1850 his office was on Bridge St. (now Spring Garden St) and he lived on Haverford and 34th.  Later his office moved to Lancaster near 35th Street….” Building of West Philadelphia, Who’s Who website.  The 1867 directory lists S. P. Hutchinson, conveyancer living at 2201 Spring Garden.  However, it lists Samuel Hutchinson, age at 35th & Haverford living at 334 (old numbering) N. 33rd St.  He died in 1873 when he was living at 3407 Baring St.  (He should not be confused with S. P. Hutchinson, conveyancer.)

1891 Directory: Charles J. Suplee, salesman

            The 1880 Census and the 1887 Directory list him at 1529 Wallace St., his parents’ house.  His father, Thomas B. Suplee was a broker and banker.  He was a partner in Webster & Suplee, bankers.   The 1887 Directory lists him at 1529 Wallace St.  In 1890, he was listed at 3315 Hamilton St.

            In 1887, Charles J. Suplee married Caroline Pike, the granddaughter of Henry and Mary Pike.  Caroline inherited the house on the death of her mother in 1897 (see below).

 

1894, Feb. 27: Death of Elizabeth P. Suplee, infant daughter of Charles P. Suplee and Caroline Pike Suplee and granddaughter of Thomas B. and Emily J. Suplee. (Friends’ Intelligencer, March 10, 1894)

 

1895 Directory: Charles J. Suplee of Suplee & Van Leer (Charles J. Suplee & William M. Van Leer), cotton merchants at 341 Chestnut St.

 

1898 Blue Book: Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Suplee. Receiving day Monday

 

1897: Death of Elizabeth J. Pike, 77 years old,, widow of Thornton Pike and daughter of the late George Middleton Pike and Esther Tyng Justice of at the home of her son-in-law, Charles J. Suplee, 3304 Hamilton St.. She was a member of the Monthly Meeting at Green St., Philadelphia.
