            Joseph Warner Swain was born June 25, 1849 in Bristol, Bucks Co. His father, Anthony, was a lawyer. Jessie McKechnie Swain was the daughter of Alexander McKechnie and Jessie (Wilson) McKechnie. They were members of The Church of the Savior (Episcopal).

Married Jessie McKechnie; children. Evelyn, Warner, Alexander and Isabel. Established the firm of Swain Bros, 1871, and engaged continuously in the coal mining and shipping business since that date; Society of Friends. Republican. Clubs, Union League, Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Germantown Cricket, Welcome Society, St. Andrews Society. Residence, Queen Lane and Stokley St., Germantown. Business address, Pennsylvania Bldg. Philadelphia, Pa.”
