316-322 N. 32nd St. were built by John Shedwick. The depth of the lots was increased by 25 feet by his purchase in Dec. 1868 of 3206 Baring St. which extended back behind these lots.

 

320-322 N. 32nd St.: “three-story red. brick Victorian double built with 316-18…. 322 has stone facade added; original wood modillioned cornice.--- Contributing.”

History of 322 N 32nd

 

1869, June 24: Title transferred to George A. Hays by John Shedwick

            George A. Hays lived at 340 (now 402) N. 31st St. He was 24 years-old, the son of Catharine Hayes. The 1885 directory lists him as a real estate agent living at 419 N. Napa St.

 

1870:

William Gilchrist                     25        Music teacher; born in N.Y. [sic.]; personal property: $2,000

            Redelia Ann Gilchrist was the widow of W. W. Gilchrist (1818-1872).  The 1868 directory lists William as a musician living at 1602 Poplar St. along with William Gilchrist who was in the oil business. The 1870 census lists William, Sr. as in the cutlery business. William, Jr. was born in Jersey City, N.J. The 1875 directory lists him at 334 (later 414) N. 33rd St. In 1880, he lived with his wife and three children at 3311 Hamilton St. Jenny is Janet Theodore Gilchrist, Redelia’s daughter.

1871 & 1872 Directories: William W. Gilchrist of A. Becket & Gilchrist

            It appears that he taught at 3213 Sansom St. The 1875 directory lists William W. Gilchrist living at 334 N. 33rd St.

John Gardiner                          33        Boarder; civil engineer; born in N.J.

            Lee  was the son of Lee and Sarah (Hallowell) Buffington. His father was a doctor. In 1860, his father claimed only $1,000 in personal property whereas his mother claimed $25,000 in real estate and $5,000 in personal property. They were Quakers. He died in 1918.
