History of the Building

 

1902, July 22: Robert Hamilton purchased 3225-3233 Spring Garden St.

            He owned them until 1913.

 

1902: “J. A. Bohem will build four houses and a store and dwelling at the northeast corner of Thirty-third and Spring Garden streets, for Robert Hamilton, to cost $29,000….” (Inquirer, July 29)

            Jacob A. Bohem and his brother, Anthony O. Bohem, were makers of metal cornices at 3059 N. 15th St. In 1900, he was 30 years old, living with his wife and 3 young children at 7732 N. 25th St. His father was born in France and his mother in Ohio. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Ireland. The 1906 directory lists his business as “elevators.” The 1910 census lists him as an architect.

 

3221-33: “pairs of Pompeiian brick, North Italian Revival houses; second-story pressed metal bay with shield; first-floor wood columned porches; dentilled, pressed metal cornice; 3233 has first-floor shopfront with cast iron columns, and side bays on 33rd Street facade.--- Contributing”

1908 Directory: Chrisman D. Duncan, clerk, Penn. Railroad

            In 1916, David D. Chrisman was listed at 3302 N. 18th St.

 

1910: 3225-3233 were not enumerated in this census

 

1913, July 1: Titles for 3225-3231 all transferred to Louis Jones by Robert Hamilton

            Note: 3233 had been sold separately in 1908.

 

1917 WWI Draft Registration: Lownsdale Agle James, electrician

 

1919, Aug. 6: Purchased by Margaret N. Bell, wife of John W. after several transfers of 3225-3233 as a block.
