314-336 N. 31st St. were acquired by the Penlaun Corp. between about 1947-1950. The houses were torn down and the area sold to the Pennsylvania Laundry Co. about 1951.

1882 Directory (Fall 1881): Andrew Ralston, box maker

                        John Ralston, brakeman

            The 1880 census lists them living at 110 Orthodox St. Andrew’s wife, Sabina, was the daughter of Jacob Frederick and Mary Shoemaker. The 1880 census listed Andrew (age 50, born in Ireland) and Sabina (45) with three children ages: John (21), Anna (13) who died in 1882 (see below) and Carrie 8. Also living with them were Frank Spotts and his daughter, Mary who was only 6 months old. Frank was the widower of Kate (Ralston) Spotts who died in April 1880 at age 19. The 1870 census (2nd enum.) also lists Robert (21) and Christian (9). The city directories of 1891 and 1908 list Sabina widowed and living at 3422 Ludlow St.

            In May 1882, the funeral of Mary Whitecar (born c1812) was “from the residence of her son in law, Andrew Ralston, 318 North Thirty-first street.”  She was the wife of George W. Whitecar. It is likely that Mary (Shoemaker) Fredrick was remarried to George Whicare. Mary and George Whitecar lived at 1630 Barker St. Whitecar was a 59-year-old cooper.
