Dear Powelton Market Neighbors and Friends,
Although from time to time the sky looked ominous
and the wind blew up a very bad hair day, we
got through the market last week dry and happy.
Where have all the flowers gone? To bed
for the winter, that's where, or perhaps to
seed. Anyhow, John King's flower supply
is now also over for this year. He will
have plenty of Halloween supplies, however,
including pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn.
Expect his table to be overflowing with late
season veggies as well as Amish baked goods
and preserves. By the way, John tells
me he calls those round green and yellow
striped squash Sweet Dumplings; do you have
a different name?
This is the long-awaited week for Brent Fox
of B&L Grassland Farm to be back at our
market; they promise to have the usual lamb,
beef, chicken, pork, and eggs. B&L
SPECIAL OF THE WEEK: Lamb Loin and
Rib Chops, which we be $2.00 off per pound.
Turkey Alert: Brent and Lori should
have "delicious, full-flavored pasture-raised
turkeys" weighing about 10-12# ready for
your Thanksgiving table ($10. deposit needed).
Brent will have a sign-up sheet at his table,
along with info about where and when to pick
them up. He will also have an email sign-up
sheet for and specific information about a
monthly delivery of their meat throughout the
winter. Check it out - farmers and city
folk do after all eat year round, so everybody
wins!
Once again the Fahnestock Fruit Farm has oodles
of apples, to wit: Jonagold, Red Delicious,
Yellow Delicious, Granny Smith, Stayman/Winesap, Cortland,
Mutsu/Crispin, and Fuji. So many of you
went home with big bags of apples last Saturday
that I really expected the whole Village
to smell of cinnamon at any moment. The
week before neighbor Sara Corse made what she
modestly described as the best apple pie she
had ever made; she went home with more
apples - ready to try for an encore.
The UNI/UCHS garden is winding down a bit, but
they do expect to have a new crop
of spinach to add to their usual selection of arugula,
eggplant, tomatillos, tomatoes, beans, golden
beets, radishes, chard, hot peppers, kale, sage,
cilantro, basil, mint, dill, nasturtiums, and
as usual, yogurt, cheese, and Metropolitan
Bakery bread.
Lorelle Becton reports that she and her
husband had a wonderful time in Florida last
week. In addition to her usual
potions, lotions, and things that smell good, she
will be at the market with a lemon-ginger
soap, green tea-rosewood-geranium soap, and a
fresh supply of body butters to replace her
sold-out supply.
Community Notes:
Neighbor and Chef Jim Dill thinks it would
be a fine idea if we would use our
supermarket Free Turkey or Ham points to get a
ham or turkey and donate it to our Annual Powelton
December Holiday Party. Jim says
he really can't get too many!
Happy News: Our neighbors the Bodeks have
their runaway dog back!
Get Out the Vote: If any of you are unsure
about where you should vote, here is a website
that will answer that question. Just enter
your address, and your polling place will come
up on your screen.

Thanks to all of you who signed up to help
at the Vote table last week! Now our indomitable
team of Helen Henry and Pat McBee very much
need your help with the big push to get out
the vote in our 24th Ward.
- Can you help canvass next weekend
for a couple of hours?
- How about leafleting in the morning or late
afternoon?
- Always wanted to be a poll watcher?
- Because not every Division in our Ward
has a committeeperson, we need people
to fill in who can hand out sample
ballots, answer questions (you will be given
the answers to every question imaginable!),
and watch for voter intimidation.
- How about making calls to make sure that
the people who are registered follow
through and vote?
You don't need me to tell you how important
this election is; please, please, help
as much as you can. Talk to Pat McBee
at 215-349-6959, or pmcbee@juno.com
That's it for another week. See
you Saturday!
