Dear Powelton Market Supporters,
Last week was a little slow for the farmers;
maybe shoppers were away for the 3-day weekend?
At least it was a nice day.
Aubrey McCulley reports the UNI/UCHS garden
yield will have for us arugula, eggplant, tomatillos,
hot peppers, tomatoes, beans, golden beets,
radishes, pattypan squash (maybe), chard, collards,
kale, herbs (sage, basil, parsley, cilantro,
dill, mint), nasturtiums, pesto, cheese, yogurt,
and Metropolitan Bakery bread.
The Fahnestock Fruit Farm has apples galore
for us this week, so expect to find Stayman/Winesap,
Macintosh, Cortland, Jonagold, red and yellow
Delicious, Mutsu/Crispin, Fuji, and new
this week, Granny Smith. Maybe it's me
(I am not going to say maybe it's I), but hailstorm
notwithstanding, both the Fahnestock apples
and their cider seem extra special this
year.
John King's list is long again this week, and
I may have overlooked something, but here's what's
on my clipboard. John will have turnips,
greens, romaine, cherry and plum tomatoes, eggplant,
broccoli (which he had boxed up and ready to
go last Saturday but forgot to put on the
truck), Brussels sprouts, potatoes, onions,
cauliflower, kohlrabi, summer and winter squash,
hot and bell peppers, and pears. Wow.
He will of course also have the usual Amish
baked goods and preserves.
Pat McBee and Helen Henry will again be back
at their Voter Information table with Kerry
buttons and signs, absentee ballot applications,
and information about voter turnout activities
on October 30 & 31 and Election Day.
If you haven't already done so, please consider
signing up now to help get out the vote.
Pat and Helen have put their lives on hold to
work on registering people, and now they really
need all the help they can get for
the final push.
Brent Fox will not be here this week, but will
be back next week, October 23rd, with his pastured
meat, poultry, and eggs. Next week I hope
to have the details about the turkeys Brent will
have for your Thanksgiving tables.
Lorelle Becton will be in Pensacola, Florida
this weekend where her husband is
giving a speech at his alma mater, but will
be back the following week with new products
designed for cold weather needs.
For those of you who have asked, or wonder:
as far as I know, and that is medium far, the
last day of our Market this year will be November
20th. Much more to come on that subject
in later newsletters, or whatever you want to
call this weekly meandering.
Community Notes:
REMINDER: Tomorrow evening in their
splendid East Africa Center at 3809 Pearl
Street Bill and Betty Baumann are having an
opening night reception from 5:00 til 9:00
for their current exhibit, Sudanese Contemporary
Art, and we are all invited! This is another
neighborhood "don't miss this one."
If you haven't visited the Center, you are in
for a treat, and if you have, we know you'll
be back for this exhibit.
Meg Wise reports that the Holland bulb
sale earned $300 for the Tot Lot, which is enough
to pay for 10 months of electricity bills!
Thanks to all of you who ordered all those bulbs;
it should be a colorful Spring in Powelton!
Meg expects delivery of your bulbs in a
couple of weeks.
That's it for this week. Hope to see
you tomorrow night at the reception and Saturday
at the market.
