430-432: “two-and-one-half story, four-register mansarded brick double; original porches altered. Full-height first-floor windows. Stone lintels; bracketed cornice.”

History

 

1874, April: Deeds for 430 and 432 transferred from Joseph Campion to Charles N. Apple.

            Joseph H. Campion was a partner in Smith & Campion, cabinet makers and upholsterers at 249 S. 3rd St. and 219 Levant. He lived at 327 S. 17th St.

            The 1873 directory lists Charles N. Apple as a paperhanger living at 1312 N. 12th St. The 1880 directory lists him at 218 S. 40th St.

 

1875, July: Deed transferred from Charles N. Apple to Charles J. Bunting.

            The 1875 directory lists Bunting as a partner in Bunting & Pilkington, stove dealers at 3633 Haverford Ave. He lived at 3438 Lancaster Ave. The 1876 directory lists his home as 4006 Powelton Ave. The 877 directory lists him as a tinsmith living at 4005 Powelton Ave. Bunting’s partner, George Pilkington, bought 432, next door, at the same time.

 

1876, January: Deed transferred from Louis M. Simpson to Isaac Hazlehurst.

            Louis M. Simpson was a lawyer at 247 S. 6th St. who lived at 1606 N. 13th St. in 1876.

            Isaac Hazlehurst was a lawyer who lived at 2020 Spruce St. in 1881.

 

1879 Directory: Welsh John, clerk

 Welsh Samuel A., lawyer, 711 Walnut St.

            In the 1870 census, John Walsh claimed $100,000 in real estate and $33,000 in personal property. He listed his occupation as “gentleman.” Samuel was listed as “reading law.” The household included a coachman, a housekeeper, and a domestic servant. The 1860 census lists him as a contractor with $5,000 in real estate and $500 in personal property. He and his wife, Josephine, had six children.

1881 Directory: Helmbold Edward R. Jr., clerk

            The 1880 census shows him living with his parents at 908 N. 17th St. He was a 22 and single. His father was in the insurance business.

 

1883, May: Deed transferred from Isaac & Caroline E. (wife) Hazlehurst to Henry Carver.

 

1883, July: Deed transferred from Henry Carver to Edwin Middleton.

            Edwin Middleton manufactured lightning rods. In 1880, he and his wife, Kate, lived at 1704 Girard Ave. He was 51 and she was 50.

 

1884, March: Deed transferred from Edwin & Kate W. (wife) Middleton to William A. Stewart.

            In 1880, William and Martha Stewart lived at 73 N. 38th St. He was a 34-year-old clerk whose parents were born in Ireland.

 

1898, August: Deed transferred from William A. Stewart to Martha C. Stewart.

 

1900:

            James J. Stewart died April 9, 1910 of acute nephritis. He was working as a salesman.

 

1902, Nov. 6: Marriage of Helen S. Stewart and William W. Young

 

1910:

William W. Young                   39        Traffic supervisor for telephone co.

Helen Stewart Young               35        Married 7 years, no children

Mabel Gibson Stewart             37        Sister-in-law; single

Susie Harris                             19        Servant; black; born in Va.

 

1912: Mrs. Helen Young and Mabel Stewart were members of the Tenth Presbyterian Church at 38th and Hamilton Sts.

 

1914, Oct.: Marriage license issued to Mabel Stewart of 430 N. 37th St. and James M. Bell of 1007 N. 44th St.

 

1920:

William W. Young       44        Works for telephone co.; owner, free of a mortgage

1930:

William Young             57        Salesman of stocks and bonds; married at age 25; owner, house valued at $6,000

1934, May 1: Death of Mary Stewart Huber, 57 years old, wife of Walter J. Huber, daughter of William A. Stewart and Martha Gibson of 430 N. 37th St.

            “She taught in the [Philadelphia] elementary schools from 1899 until her marriage in 1903. After the death of her husband she re-entered the school system in 1911 as a teacher in the Normal School.” (Inquirer, May 5)

            Her will left $7,000 to her sisters. (Inquirer, May 17)

 

1940:

William Young             67        Securities salesman, earned $700 in 1939; owner, house valued at $3,700

Helen Young               65        One year of high school

 

1945, Oct. 21: Death of William W. Young, 73 years old, son of George Young and Lavinia I. Bell

            Helen Young died in 1955. She was living at the Garden Court Apartments.

 

1968 Dir.: Conyers W.

 

1984: For Sale “430 N. 37th St., $68,000. Well maintained handsome 6BR moderately priced home in excellent neighborhood. BYE R. E.” (Inquirer, Mar. 4)
