3821 Lancaster Avenue

 

The building’s front was altered in 1891 (see below).

 

“Circa 1890, three-story brick rowhouse with commercial first floor fronts. The building wraps around from Baring Street to Lancaster Avenue… partial stone front with small. sculptures on 3821… All upper windows have stone sills and slightly arched lintels. Double bracketed wood cornice. Contributing.”

1891: Permit issued to Frederick M. Pile for alterations at 3821 Lancaster (Inquirer, July 30)

 

1891, July 24: “A Supreme Secretary Arrested. Elmer E. Baldwin, who has a real estate office at No. 3821 Lancaster avenue, was arrested yesterday by Special Officer Harbridge, of the Sixteenth district, charged with defrauding as collector and secretary of Branch No. 3, of the Mutual Endowment Beneficial Association. The warrant was sworn out by members of the branch, who claimed that they have been duped. Bail in $500 was demanded by Magistrate Clarke.” (Inquirer)

 

1894:

“Mr. Frederick M. Pile has become one of the leaders in the law and real estate businesses during his three years in West Philadelphia. Previous to his opening his handsome and commodious office at 3821 Lancaster avenue, he was for seven years with his father, Joseph M. Pile, a well-known member of the bar, at 512 Walnut street. His work now requires both offices and West Philadelphians are fortunate to have in their midst an attorney and conveyancer who has continued extensive dealings with the leading down-town busines offices.” (Inquirer, Dec. 16)

 

1896: “Madame Candee’s School of Parisian Millinery will open September 1 at 3821 Lancaster ave. Thorough in all details.” (Inquirer, Sept. 13)

            “Mme. Candee has removed her Parisian Millinery School from 1237 Arch street to 3821 Lancaster avenue, and is ready to receive a limited number of scholars. The system taught is most thorough and complete.” (Inquirer, Sept. 27)
