The History of the Building

 

3621-3631:  “three-story red brick Victorian rowhouse; two registers with segmental stone lintels, decorative carved wood cornices and brackets. All but 3621 and 3623 have first-floor projecting bays and all but 3625 (Victorian porch) have circa 1905 Colonial Revival porches”

Previous Residents

 

1869, October: Deeds for 3625-3631 Hamilton transferred from Thomas Foster to John M. Mole.

            3625-3631 Hamilton were included in a similar transaction in October of that year.

            John M. Mole was almost certainly the bulder.

 

1870, March: Deeds for 3621-3631 Hamilton transferred from John M. Mole to John K. McCurdy.

 

1871, April: Deed transferred from Thomas Foster to Howard R. Kern.

            The 1872 directory lists him as a clerk living at 1536 Green St.

 

1875 Directory: Kern Howard R., brickmaker

            The 1877 directory shows him living at 210 N. 36th St. He and his family are listed there in the 1880 and 1900 censuses. See some biographical information there.

 

1878, July: Deed transferred from Howard R. Kern to Howard R. Kern.

1904: “LEAMAN, WM. GILMORE, 3625 Hamilton St., Philadelphia, Pa.

Born at Black Horse, Chester Co., Pa., March 20, 1859. Received preliminary education at Parkersburg Academy.  Since graduation he has been engaged in the practice of medicine. Married Nellie Frances Pelly and has one child. He is an Episcopalian.”

            In 1910-1950, the Leamans lived at 3700 Baring St.  (See a more complete biography there.)

 

1915, February: Deed transferred from Howard R. Kern to The Philadelphia T/S/D/L Co. SubTrustee for Clara D. Lee William Parry Deceased and James Baird Deceased.

 

1920:

Martha W. Kater          67        Aunt [of wife]; father born in Scotland, mother in Ohio

            John Peter Etlar and Margaretta Kater Cunningham were married in Philadelphia in 1891.  In 1900, they lived at 4024 Powelton Ave.  In that census, he gave his date of immigration as 1878.  In 1910, they lived in Ward 27 (West Philadelphia south of Market St.).

            In 1930, William Etlar was living at 3611 Baring St.  Opal Etlar was living at 205 S. DeKalb St.  She was working as a practical nurse for a family.  She died in 1984:  “Opal Etlar, 91, formerly of Allentown, died Monday in Doylestown Manor. She was a commercial artist. Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late John P. and Margaretta (Kater) Etlar. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Allentown. There are no immediate survivors.” (The Morning Call, December 27, 1984.)

 

1921, Nov. 2: Death of John P. Etlar, husband of Margaretta Kater Etlar of 3625 Hamilton St.

 

1923: Marriage of Margaretta D. Etlar to William C. Rodeck

            He was previously married.  He married Lillian Tyson in 1908 in Delaware.  When he registered for the draft for WWI in 1917, they were living at 3461 E. St.  He was a weaver working for the Goldenshorpe Co.

 

1928: Marriage of Mary I. Roberts to George T[rout] Etlar

            In 1930, they lived at 529 William St.  He was a knitter in a textile factory and she was a “looker” in the factory.  When he enlisted in the Army in 1943, he listed his status as “divorced with dependents.”

 

1930:

William Rodeck           50        Weaver in a textile mill; first married at age 35; owner, house valued at $3,500

Margartta Etlar            62        Mother-in-law; widowed

 

1940:

George Etlar                34        Clerk for building materials co., earned $900 for 40 weeks of work in 1939; 2 years of high school; renting for $35 per month

Margueretta Etlar        74        Mother; widowed; 8 years of education

William Rodek             56        Brother-in-law; weaver for rug manuf., eared $600 for 25 weeks work in 1939; 6 years of education

Margaret Rodek           46        Sister; 8 years of education

Jane Murray                 81        Lodger; widowed; 8 years of education

 

1942 WWII Draft Registration: William C. Rodeck, born Dec. 14, 1878 in Stanton, Del. He was 5’6” tall and weighed 141 lbs.
