The History of the Building

 

The northern boundary of the houses on the northern side of Hamilton St. from 31st St. to 38th St. was the northern border of the Bingham-Baring estate.

 

3601-03, 3605-07, 3609-11, 3613-15, and 3617:  These houses appear to have been built by the same builder but may have been built for three different developers. They were all built about 1877-’78.

 

two-and-one-half story Second Empire-style doubles, stone facade over brick. Victorian wood porches (3609-11, 3613--15 removed). Slate-shingled mansards with four dormers with decoratively carved wood gables. Ornate wood Victorian cornices. Segmental stone lintels….”

Previous Residents

 

1872 Atlas shows 3601-3619 owned by J. G. Hardie. In 1860, James G. Hardie lived at 3200 Arch St. The 1861 Directory lists him as a merchant with an office at 633 Market St.

 

1878 Directory (Fall 1877): Henry Drinkhouse, bookkeeper at 307 Arch

1879, June: Deed transferred from James H. Lyons to Margaret Garo(?).

            The 1881 Directory lists James H. Lyons, plumber, 17 N. 9th St., house 1327 Green. The 1870 census lists him as 35 years old with a wife and one child. He was born in Ireland. His real estate holdings were listed at $1,000 and his personal property at $200. He owned 3607-3617 Hamilton St. which he sold to various individuals between October 1877 and June 1879.

 

1879, July: Deed transferred from Margaret Garo(?) to Thomas M. Helmbold.

            Thomas W. Helmbold married Miss Mary J. Davis in 1893.

            In the 1887 Directory, he was listed at 3621 Hamilton St.

 

1898 Blue Book: Mr. & Mrs. Arthur Wilson

 

1899, Nov. 2: Death of Arthur Wilson of 3611 Hamilton St. He committed suicide on the grave of his son, Merritt P. Wilson, in Delaware.

1902: for sale “3611 Hamilton St. Handsome 3-Story, 12-room house, front and side yard, porch, good plumbing; select neighborhood; near four trolley lines; price low.” (Inquirer,Oct. 5)

1922, Apr. 29: Marriage of Marion Althea Pomerene Wilson to Samuel Ellwood Howes. He is the son of Mrs. I. W. Howes. The ceremony took place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 3600 Baring St. with Rev. William J. Cox officiating.

 

1930:

Zellah P. Wilson          72        Widowed; born in Ohio; owner, house valued at $7,500

 

1937: “Pomerene Leaves $5000 to Sister Here.

            “The will of Ohio’senator Atlee Pomeren filed for probate in Cleveland yesterday, named a sister, Mrs. Zillah P. Wilson, 3611 Hamilton st., this city, a beneficiary in the amount of $5000…Out of the estimated estate of $192,000….” (Inquirer, Nov. 23)

 

1939, August: Deed transferred from Zillah P. Wilson to Solomon & Anna (wife) Acker.

            Zillah Wilson died Nov. 3, 1940.
