The History of the Building

 

two-story, Italianate house, wood clapboards, one of the few wood houses in Philadelphia. Paired full-height first-floor windows, Flat overhanging roof with double modillioned cornice. Circa 1895 Colonial Revival porch with fluted columns and, fluted pilasters along sides; rear brick addition with Rococo stained glass”

c1840: Original deed holder John Britton, 30 acres from Mantua England

 

Sometime in 1840-1853 the property passed to his daughter

 

c1853: Bonsall conveyed property for $1,075

 

1854, March 20: Registration of deed transfer from Edward H. Bonsall to Jeremiah Croasdale

            The 1856 directory lists J. Croasdale, commercial merchant at 30 N. Wharves St. and living at Bridge above 6th [i.e., 35th].

 

1856, June 7: Registration of deed from Jeremiah Croasdale to John M. Pomeroy

 

1856, Dec. 8: Registration of deed from John M. Pomeroy to David Thain

            The 1858 directory lists David Thain

 

1858, June12: Registration of deed transfer from David Thain to Samuel S. Shriver

sold for $4,000.

            The 1858 directory lists him as a flour merchant at 122 S. Delaware Ave. and living at 316 Marshall St.

            The 1863 directory lists James, Jr., a contractor living on S. 36th St. above Chestnut St. The 1870 census shows him  as a paint manufacturer with $10,000 in real estate and $1,500 in personal property. He and Mary had five young children born since 1860. They were living at 1412 S. Penn Sq.

 

1868, June 7: Title transferred to Henry C. Young by Charles McKeone

Henry C. Young and Rebecca A. Wilson were married in 1853. They were members of the Quaker Monthly Meeting on Arch St.

In 1861 & 1866 Directories Henry is listed as: paying teller, Commonwealth Bank, h 1441 N 7th. He was the first cashier of Merchants’ Exchange Bank (named “Iron Bank,” 915 Market St.) when it was incorporated in May 1871. 1903, Aug. 17: Death of Rebecca A. Young, wife of Henry C. Young of 3502 Spring Garden St.

 

1905: Sold by Henry Young for $5,500 to Dr. Slaymaker

            Henry Young died in 1913 at age 89. He was living at 3958 Aspen St.

1905: Permit issued: “J. M. Slaymaker, owner, repair frame building, new slate roof, a two-story brick addition, 16x20 feet, 3502 Spring Garden st.; cost $1500” (Inquirer, Jan. 12))

            John Martin Slaymaker was born in 1862 in Lancaster Co., Pa. His parents were John Mathias Slaymaker, Elizabeth Snyder. In 1880, they were living in Paradise, Lancaster Co. In 1900, they were living in Salisbury Township, Lancaster Co.

 

1918, Sep. 30: Death of Elizabeth Slaymaker née Snyder, 81 years old, of 3502 Spring Garden St.

 

1920:

John M. Slaymaker         58         Physician, ear, nose and throat

Martha Slaymaker          51         Sister; music teacher

            In 1930, he is living alone in Salisbury, Lancaster Co., Pa.

 

1930: The house does not seem to appear in the 1930 census. It may have been (temporarily) empty.

 

1937, Nov. 30: Death of John Martin Slaymaker, 76 years old, of 3502 Spring Garden St. He was born in Vintage Lancaster Co.

            “Dr. J. M. Slaymaker

            “Dr. John Martin Slaymaker, physician in this city since 1905, died at the Joseph Price Memorial Hospital Tuesday.

            “A native of Vintage, Lancaster county, Dr. Slaymaker received his pre-medical training at Lehigh University and was graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1882.

            “For many years he practiced medicine at Gap, until locating in Philadelphia 32 years ago. He was a member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society.” (Inquirer, Dec. 2)

 

1940:

Elsie Slaymaker              44         Private music teacher, earned $2,500 in 1939; single; four years of college; owner, house valued at $10,000

Virginia McDowell         49         Sister; widowed; “Lady, never worked;” four years of college

            They both lived in this house in 1935.

 

1950 Directory: Martha J. Slaymaker

 

1961 Purchased by Ernie and Gladys Treon in a closed bid deal for $9,505. Three parties were interested, including the church at 3500 Spring Garden and a Dr. from Penn.

 

2001: Purchased by Eric M. Cohen and Anne J. Pomerantz
