The History of the Building

 

3423-25: “two-and-one-half story, Second Empire style double~house with stone facade and asphalt-shingled mansard. First floor full-height windows have been replaced by aluminum-sided projecting bay. Original wood. part removed; metal substituted. Scroll-shaped and simple bracketed cornice below mansard which has four dormers with arched window heads.”

            Philip Sydney Brown was born in 1825 in Scotch Plains, N.J.  He married Natalie Josepha Wescott in 1856.  She was born in Philadelphia in 1825.  They died in November and December of 1907.

1905, Jan. 10: Death of Natalie J. Brown, daughter of Phillip S. and Natalie J. Brown of 3423 Race St.  Funeral services at her late residence.

            Natalie J. Brown (the mother) died Dec. 4, 1907 at the residence of her son in Somerville, N.J.  Philip Brown died Nov. 6, 1908 at age 83.  He was living in Easton, Pa.  Burial was at West Laurel Hill Cemetery.

            Edwin Town was born in Philadelphia.  His father was an undertaker.  In 1880, Edwin and Florence lived in Florence, Burlington Co., N.J. where he was a physician.  In 1900, they lived at 740 N. 40th St.

            Vaccinate Railroad Employees. Dr. Edwin C. Town, medical examiner and chief surgeon of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, has, within the last two weeks, aided by assistants, vaccinated 4200 of the company’s employees, and reports that 80 per cent. were successful.”

            “After recuperating from a serious attack of blood poisoning, resulting from an infection during an operation, Dr. Edwin C. Town, one of the resident physicians at the Cooper Hospital, resumed his duties yesterday.” (Phila. Inquirer, April 18, 1911)

            Dr. Edwin C. Town, Sr. died Sept. 29, 1913.  They were living in Narberth, Pa.

            “A woman’s suffrage meeting was held Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Edwin C. Town at Narberth and Windsor avenues…” (Our Town, Dec. 3, 1914)

 

1911, Nov. 23: Marriage license issued to Mary B. Foster of 1100 Spruce St. and William C. Russell of 3423 Race St.

1921, Aug. 8: Death of Josephine M. Glasse, formerly of 613 S. 19th St.  Funeral services at her late residence, 3423 Race St.

 

1930:

Anthony Glasse           77        Born in France, immigrated in 1887; married at age 27; owner, house valued at $10,000

Josephine Glasse          65        Born in France; married at age 18
