The History of the Building

 

This house is shown on the Baist Atlas published in 1886. The 1878 Scott Atlas shows an earlier building at this corner.

 

Queen Anne style red brick two-and-one-half story residence; entrance faces 34th Street. Porch is supported by turned wood posts on brick pedestals and wraps around to Powelton Avenue. The building has multi-light windows and several decorative, bracketed wood gables. A large red slate shingled gable faces Powelton Avenue. Minimally altered; in need of repair. Architect: Addison Hutton.”

            In 1942, James Shrader’s draft card for WWII gives his home address as 230 Grays Lane, Haverford. He was born in Beaver Co., Pa. He was a partner in Guckes, Shrader and Burtt with offices in the Packard Building. He gave his height and weight as 5’4”, 130 lbs.

            The 1950 directory lists both J. F. Shrader and John A. Shrader as attorneys with offices in the Packard Building.
