1863 Directory: Owen Hughes, hides and tallow at Market above 31st St., home southwest corner of 33rd and Race streets

            The 1850 census lists him as an innkeeper.  The directory gives the address as Lancaster and Moore (34th) St.  In 1860-1862, they lived at 3417 Hamilton St.

 

1867 Directory: Owen Hughes, hides & tallow at 3036 Market

                         Richard J. Hughes, clerk at 238 S. 3rd St. (Shippens & van Houten: E. W. Shippen & Isaac van Houten [3225 Race St.])

                         William D. Hughes, hides & tallow at 3036 Market

1873: Death of William Davis, 74 years old. Funeral from the residence of his son-in-law, Owen Hughes, 3300 Race St.  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery.

1880, Sept. 5: Death of Mary Ann Davis, 84 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery.

 

1883, Jan. 4: Death of Rebecca Davis, 88 years old, of 3300 Race St.  She was born in Philadelphia and never married.  She was confirmed in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1846. 

 

1886, Aug. 14: Death of Owen Hughes, 66 years old, of 3300 Race St.  He was born in Chester Co., Pa.

 

1892, Oct. 12: Death of Annie Laivs, 63 years old, of 3300 Race St. She was black and worked as a cook.  She was widowed.

 

1894: Marriage of Fanny Middleton Hughs to Harry Ellis Corrie

            Harry Ellis Corrie was the son of George Joseph Corrie and Sarah Hewes Evans.  In 1870, they lived at 3509 Hamilton St. His father was a music teacher.  Harry was a clerk in a drugstore.  In 1880, he lived with his parents in Radnor, Pa.

            Eli Berrel Hallowell was the son of Eli Hallowell. The 1865 directory lists his father as a coach maker living at 1330 Spring Garden St.  He and Mary (Hughes) were members of The Church of the Savior (Episcopal).

            Note: later censes and some other sources spell the name “Hughs.”

 

1905, Philadelphia Inquirer: “Mr. and Mrs. Eli B. Hallowell, of 3300 Race street, are spending August near Portland, Maine.” (Aug. 6, 1905)

1917, Nov. 26: Death of Isaac Bernard Hughes, 58 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Cause of death listed as “chronic intestinal nephritis.” Burial at Woodlands Cemetery. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)

 

1918, March 24: Baptism of William Davis Hughes, son of Owen and Elizabeth M. Hughes, age 71, born Oct. 11, 1846 at Spring Garden Methodist Episcopal Church

 

1919, July 8: Death of Eli B. Hallowell, 71 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Cause of death was heart failure.  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)

 

1920:

1922, Dec. 14: Death of Henry E. Corrie, 71 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Cause of death was angina.  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)

 

1930:

1934, June 29: Death of William D. Hughs

            This spelling of the name appears occasionally.

 

1937, April 17: Death of Owen Hughes, 60 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Cause of death was acute coronary occlusion.  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)

 

1938, Jan. 14: Death of Fanny Hughes Corrie, 85 years old, of 3300 Race St.  Cause of death was listed as “heart block.”  Burial at Woodlands Cemetery. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)
