314-336 N. 31st St. were acquired by the Penlaun Corp. between about 1947-1950. The houses were torn down and the area sold to the Pennsylvania Laundry Co. about 1951.

            Charles W. Kolbe was in business with his brother, Dietrich W. Kolbe, who lived behind him at 323 N. 32nd St.

            Henrietta Klingelhoeffer was married to Charles W. Kolbe.

 

1871, May 22: Birth of Wilhelmina (Minnie) F. Kolbe

 

1875 Directory: Charles W. Kolbe, surgical instruments at 15 S. 9th St.

 

1878, May 3: Deed transferred from Charles W. Kolbe to George A. Klingelhoeffer.

            In 1880, Georg August Klingelhoeffer was a 38 year-old cabinet maker living at 2501 Jefferson St. He was born in Prussia. He married Caroline Catharina Müller at the Salem Zion United Church of Christ, the same church attended by the Kobe family.

 

1878, Aug. 9: Deed transferred from George A. Klingelhoeffer to Henrietta Kolbe.

1886, Jan. 27: Death of Emil C. Kolbe, 24 years old

 

1893, May 17: Deed transferred from Henrietta Kolbe to Wilhelmina Zeisse.

            Siegman Zeisse and Wilhelmina (Kolbe) Zeisse were born in Prussia. They arrived from Prussia along with Louis Kolbe and Marie Kolbe (Dietrich Kolbe’s daughter). They were part owners of a hotel and restaurant at 820 Walnut St. Wilhemena was probably Charles and Dietrich Kolbe’s sister.

 

1893, Sept. 2: Deed transferred from Louis & Wilhelmina (Weichert) Zeisse, Dietrich W. & Suma Zeisse, William & Mary Zeisse and The Fidelity Insurance Trust and Deposit Co. guardian of Jennie E. Zeiss to Frederick Zeisse & Charles W Zeisse.

 

1894: Marriage license issued to Henrietta M. E. Kolbe and Joseph H. A. Schmidt

            The 1899 directory lists him living at 654 N. 33rd St.

 

1897 Directory: Charles W. Kolbe, artificial limb maker at 15 S. 9th St.

            He died May 12, 1900 while living at 654 N. 33rd St. Henrietta lived there in 1900 with their daughter and son-in-law, Henrietta and Joseph Schmidt, and their two kids and Minnie Kolbe.

 

1899, April 1: Deed transferred from Mary M. Zeisse, Julius Z. Neufela & Jennie. E. (wife) Zeisse to Charles Zeisse.

            The 1890 directory lists Charles W. Zeisse, clerk, living at 816 Dickinson. The 1900 census lists him at 820 Walnut St., the address of his family’s hotel which he owned and managed. He was the son of Siegman and Wilhelmina Zeisse and brother of Louis Zeisse. Wilhelmina died in 1897.
