3216 Summer St.

 

3200 block of Summer St. “Queen Anne-style block of doubles built by the same developer as Winter Street. This block of two-and-one-half story brick houses with pressed brick detail and projecting fronts and side gables has undergone more radical alterations. Several porches have been removed, or enclosed with aluminum siding or permastone.”

These houses were designed by George W. and William D. Hewitt and developed by Herman Wendell and Walter Bassett Smith.

 

The History

 

1899, Oct. 11: Marriage of Laura May Field to James Wood. They were married by Rev. Charles M. Armstrong.

            She was the daughter of Charles J. Field, 3502 Powelton Ave.

            In 1910, Albert Wood lived at 5020 Hazel Ave. with his wife, Corrine, their son, and her mother-in-law, Rose A Nusbaum.

 

1910:

James Wood                47        Machinery salesman; born in England, immigrated in 1869, a naturalized citizen; renting

Laura F Wood              42

Bertha Field                 38        Sister-in-law

Ella E. Vaughan          17        Servant; black; born in VA.

            Laura Wood died in 1917 at age 50. They were living in the Avondale Apartments at 39th and Lancaster.
