“During
the years 1877 and 1878, after returning to Leipzig, John F. Himmelsbach sent
letters, apparently as a musical correspondent, to the Philadelphia Evening
Bulletin.
“On February 20, 1870, at the age of
21, John Himmelsbach, along with Wenzel Kopta, and Rudolph Hennig, founded the
Philadelphia Musical Academy, "one of the first [colleges] in America to
teach music in a class" and "also had concerts, lectures, classes in
harmony, and choral and symphonics groups free to enrolled students".
