1874, Feb. 11: Marriage of Emma R. Jones to Albert S. L. Shields of 4035 Aspen St.

            They were married at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

 

1875 Directory: Joseph T. Jones, oils

 

1876 Directory: Albert S. L. Shields, lawyer at 104 S. 6th St.

            The 1874 directory lists him at 4035 Aspen St.

Bridget Morris              20        Servant; born in Ireland

            Albert S. L. Shields was born in Chester Co., Penna. Sept. 29, 1850. He was the son of Thomas H. Shields, a wealthy merchant, and his wife, Elizabeth. The 1860 census lists them in Valley Township, Chester Co. Thomas reported real estate worth $18,000 and personal property worth $3,000.

1894: “In its present flourishing condition the [Union Republican] club ranks with any similar organization in the country. Among its members are the leading lights of local Republicanism.

“For a few years prior to 1892 the club was somewhat disturbed by internal dissensions, and there were some fears of its sinking into oblivion. It is probable that such would have been the fate of the club, had it not been for the energy displayed by A. S. L. Shields, Theodore B. Stulb, Charles R. Graham and others in the reorganization of the club, which was effected in November, 1892. The reorganization was thorough, the membership list being relieved of all objectionable names, and plans made for the refurnishing of the club's headquarters at Eleventh and Chestnut streets.”   Shields became president of the Club.             They were divorced about 1902.

1901, Dec. 24: Death of Emma R. Shields, wife of A. S. L. Shields of 217 N. 33rd St.

            Died “after a month’s illness…  Mrs. Shields was noted for her broad charity, and many will morn her as a benefactor.”  (Inquirer, Dec. 25, 1901)

            Joseph L. Shields married Mary B. Cooper in 1916. He was living at 915 S. 19th St. He died May 28, 1917 when he was living at 1500 Mt. Vernon St.
