209-211 “two-and-one-half story Second Empire style double; stone facade over brick construction. Circa 1920 Colonial Revival style door surround, and pent roof where porch would have been. Original bracketed wood cornice, central paired dormer window and two outer ones projecting from slate-shingled mansard”

Previous Residents of 211 N. 36th Street

 

1871, Jan. 2: Title transferred to Archibald Freeman by George S. Gerhard

                        The same day it was transferred to Clara Horter.

            Freeman acquired the twin lot (209) on the same day. The 1868 directory lists him as a “carman” living at 3527 Rockland. The 1872 directory lists him as a contractor living at 3314 Haverford Ave. The 1870 census lists him as a 46-year-old paving contractor who was born in Ireland. He listed personal property worth $1,000, but no real estate. He was married with two children.

 

1875 Directory (Fall, 1874): Lafayette Horter, contractor, house: N. 36th near Race St.

            The 1870 census listed them at 3845 Spring Garden St. The 1873 directory lists him as a grocer at N. 30th St. near Fairmount.

1908, Oct. 31: Death of Lafayette Horter, 77 years old, son of Jacob W. Horter and Margaret Kline. The death certificate listed his occupation as decorator.

            In 1920 and 1930, they lived at 315 N. 37th St.

 

1917, Jan. 24: Marriage license issued to Lillian A. Horter and William N. Guthrie (3911 Brown St.)

            In 1920 and 1930, they lived with her sister and brother-in-law at 315 N. 37th St.

 

1917, Feb. 7: Marriage of Francis Marie Clare (1214 S. 45th St.) to Robert Morris Horter, son of Clara King Horter. (Records of the Church of the Savior (Protestant Episcopal), 38th and Chestnut Streets)

 

1920:

            Charles S. Murphy Horter’s wife died Sept. 17, 1919 when they were living at 3624 Baring St. (See her obituary there.)  He died April 11, 1938 in Lower Merion.

            The deed was transferred to Mary B. Holgate, et al.

 

1923, Apr. 16: Title transferred to Robert M. Horter by Mary B. Holgate, et al.

 

1930: This house was apparently missed in the census.

 

1940, Feb. 10: Title transferred to Bettina A. Bennett by Robert M. Horter

 

1941, May 2: Title transferred to Herbert F. Bordman and Adelheid, his wife, by Bettina A. Bennett

            They acquired the twin (209) on Jan. 30, 1941.

 

1952, May 16: Title transferred to George Wolfman and Ruth, his wife, by Herbert F. Bordman and Adelheid, his wife

            They acquired the twin (209) on the same day.

 

1954, Dec. 20: Title transferred to Isadore Stonberg and Freda, his wife, by George Wolfman and Ruth, his wife

            They acquired the twin (209) on the same day.
