The History of the Building

 

two-and-one-half story Victorian red brick mansarded double, originally single, joined internally. Pressed brick detail is particularly ornate in the front gable, which has a bracketed wood cornice. Second floor pressed metal projecting bay is a later addition. The door opening, has been-partially bricked in and altered. The porch roof, an alteration, is shared by its neighboring house 208. Architect: Addison Hutton.”

1969: The houses on the west side of the 200 block of 34th St. were saved from condemnation and demolition by an agreement between the Powelton Village Homeowners Association and the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. (see: Powelton Quarterly, vol 1(1); pp 1 &3.)

1897, April 13: Death of Louisa Fletcher Mitchell, 74 years old,, wife of the late Jonathan B. Mitchell and mother of Henry F. Mitchell. Funeral at her late home, 210 N. 34th St.

            Jonathan B. Mitchell died in 1882. He had been a partner in the publishing firm J. B. Lippencott & Co.

 

1897: Henry F. Mitchell served as vice president of the American Dahlia Society (Phila. Inquirer, Sept. 9, 1897)

            They lived in this house in 1935. Horace G. Hill, Jr. was a member of a five-generation Powelton Family (Powelton History Blog, Oct. 12, 2012). He grew up at 3416 Baring St. In 1930, they lived at 308 N. 37th St. Horace died Nov. 29, 1968 in Bryn Mawr Hospital. He was 79.
