Powelton Artist Emil Baumann Exhibits
Works at Project H.O.M.E. Gallery
The colorful, multi-textured works of Powelton Village
artist Emil Baumann are currently on display at Project
H.O.M.E., 1515 Fairmount Ave., through March 23rd,
2001. The exhibition, titled “Emil and Brujo
—World Art,” is open weekdays from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. or by calling (215) 878-1825 for an appointment.
Emil Baumann began his art career at Prints in Progress
at the CEO and continued studying at the University
City Arts League. In addition to these influences,
Emil’s work also reflects his travels with his
parents, Betty and Bill Baumann, in the United States,
Mexico, Turkey, Africa, and Eastem Europe. Emil was
particularly influenced by the three years that his
family lived in Kenya. During his travels, Emil participated
in numerous traditional and religious ceremonies;
he also formed friendships with artists from many
continents. According to exhibit curator Robert Bullock,
“Emil’s rich and sensually appealing non-representational
art comes from deep within and serves as a primary
form of expression.”
The other featured artist, “Brujo” was
bom and raised in Mexico City. A self-taught artist,
Brujo creates his art from discarded or “found”
materials. He draws his inspiration from a traditional
art form from southern Mexico called “Alegrifes,”
sculptures made of paper-mache depicting demons, trolls,
animals, or creatures of mystical or magical significance.
The art gallery at Project H.O.M.E is managed by
Coalition lngenu. Robert Bullock, who directs Coalition
lngenu, explains that “part of the mission of
the gallery at Project Home is to help diminish the
stigma surrounding difficult circumstances and to
honor the spirit of those who make the most of their
abilities as an inspiration to others."
