Dear Powelton Market Friends,
What a gloriously cool day we had for the market
last Saturday; the ominous rainclouds
just gave up and went elsewhere.
This week Rachel Glick will again have many
varieties of cut flowers that she will make
into very special artful bouquets for
us. Did you notice last week the large heads
of brilliant red cockscomb (and aren't they
are well-named!); she will have more this week. Rachel
reports that they dry beautifully, and suggests
you might want to shake their seeds over your
flower bed and wait for a wondrous crop.
John King will have quantities of the same fruit,
veggies, baked goods, and preserves that
he had last week, including white eggplant,
red and green peppers, sweet corn, carrots,
and purple and yellow plums, pears, and blackberries.
He forgot the huge onions that Jack
and I are so fond of, and promised to remember them
this week.
Lorelle Becton will be selling her jars of shower
scrub for $2 this week, a real bargain. In addition
to her usual array of potions and lotions, she
will have a new peppermint spray, some herbal
perfume that some of you tested and liked, and
more aftershave. NOTE: Lorelle is in serious
need of a dependable way to get from her home
at 46th & Lancaster to our market. It is
not far, but she has too much stuff to bring
on a trolley, and getting a cab is an iffy proposition.
Can anyone help? Please let Lorelle know.
((She would expect to pay for a ride.)
Bob Fahnestock will again have peaches
and tomatoes. I didn't think it possible,
but the new peach variety Bob had last
week is even better than the peaches he
had the week before! Reminder: A peach comes
apart much more easily if you cut
it in half in the middle between the obvious
seams; the pit just pops out!
Duane Wood of UCHS/UNI (newcomers to the
list--this stands for a University City High
School/Urban Nutrition Initiative collaboration)
reports that they will again have
kale, chard, tomatoes, okra, eggplant, and collards;
mint, basil, and thyme; and yogurt, cheese,
and pesto. They have also placed an order this
week for Metropolitan Bakery bread; let's hope
it doesn't get lost this time. By the by, did
you notice how attractive their tables looked
last week? The University City students are
learning a lot about marketing, aren't they!
Helen Henry and Pat McBee will at the market
from 10:00-12:30 with election related information, voter
registration forms, and now absentee ballot
applications. They report wonderful conversations
this past Saturday both at the Market and at
the gathering in the afternoon in Pat's
back yard. IDEA OF THE WEEK: Sign up to
join in the Powelton-Mantua voter registration
drive to take place in September. The next brainstorming
meeting for ways to help turn out the vote will
be Thursday, August 19, 7:30 p.m. 3208 Hamilton
in the back yard. For more info contact <mailto:pmcbee@juno.com>pmcbee@juno.com.
It is Lori and Brent Fox's week at our market,
but they have not told me what they will have.
Jessica Manlin Strauss of Urban Girls Produce
should also be at our market, but I have not
heard back from them about what they will have.
Hope the weather forecast is wrong, and that
the rain will be gone by Saturday. See you either
way.
