The History of the Building

 

424-438 N. 34th was previously occupied by a large house owned by James B. Ferree, numbered 3404 Spring Garden St.

 

1892 Bromley Atlas shows 424-438 N. 34th St. as a single lot owned by William Bliss.

 

424-438: “three-story Pompeiian brick late Queen Anne block. Porch-fronted, some altered. Brick pilasters separating each unit. Elaborate pressed metal cornice and slate upper story with projecting plinths between alternate forms of pedimented windowheads.”

            The 1891 directory lists John J. Clyde of Roats & Clyde living at 2403 N. 15th St.

            John J. Clyde, Jr. was manager of the Cuba Land and Steamship Co., 620 Witherspoon Building.

Jennie Gessler              52        Widowed, 2 children; born in Germany, immigrated in 1871; renting

Selma Gessler              22        Daughter; public school teacher; single; born in N.Y., both parents born in Germany

Christine Edwards       54        Boarder; public school teacher; widowed, 3 children, 1 surviving

Francis Cornigh           55        Boarder; single

Rebecca Woodfall        32        Boarder; single; born in N.J.

John W. Miller             26        Boarder; single

 

1920:

James T. Moore           45        Sales manager for a rubber company; born in Ohio, father born in Pa., mother in Ohio

Selma A. Moore           31        born in N.J., parents born in Germany

John M. Moore            3 months

Jennie Gessler              61        Mother-in-law; born in Germany, immigrated in 1870, became a citizen in 1875

Nellie M. Coneannon   28        Servant; born in Ireland, immigrated in 1909

            In 1930, they were all living in San Francisco. John was then the general manager for a rubber company. They had a second son.

 

1930:

Daniel A. Bowers         43        Superintendent for Butler Egg Business; married, married at age 33; born in Virginia, parents born in Pa.; owner, house valued at $10,000

            In 1920, he and his wife, Helen H. Bowers, lived at 3919 Fairmount Ave. In 1930, she was living at 3419 Race St.
